The assessment is the first week in March. \u00a0Please feel free to begin studying with your child.<\/u><\/p>\n<p><u>Thank you,<\/u><\/p>\n<p><u>Mrs. Morrison<\/u><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table width=\"692\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"688\">\n<p><em>Government<\/em>\u00a0consists of people and organizations within a society with legal authority to make, carry out, and enforce laws and to manage disputes about laws.<\/p>\n<p>Most levels of government have distinct titles and duties for top leadership positions.<\/p>\n<p><em>Local government<\/em>\u00a0consists of political units of authority serving the needs of a city, town, borough, county, etc. The title for the top leadership position is mayor (or village president, township supervisor, and\/or city manager).<\/p>\n<p><em>State government<\/em>\u00a0consists of three branches of government (<em>legislative<\/em>, makes laws; <em>executive<\/em>, carries out laws; judicial, interprets the laws). The title for the top leadership position in the executive branch is\u00a0<em>governor<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Federal<\/em>\u00a0government consists of three branches of government (<em>legislative<\/em>, makes laws;\u00a0<em>executive<\/em>, carries out laws;\u00a0<em>judicial<\/em>, interprets the laws). The top leadership position in the executive branch is\u00a0<em>president<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Citizenship<\/em>\u00a0is being a member of a nation by birth or by choice. Good citizenship is doing our share to make schools, neighborhoods and communities better places, cooperating with others, obeying rules, and respecting authority.<\/p>\n<p>All individuals have needs. Individuals in a democratic society also have\u00a0<em>rights<\/em>. In a democratic society people define their rights in a\u00a0<em>foundational document<\/em>\u00a0(like the U.S. Constitution) and make laws\/rules to protect those rights.<\/p>\n<p>Core democratic values are the fundamental beliefs and constitutional principles of American society.<\/p>\n<p><em>Popular sovereignty<\/em>\u00a0means that the power of the government comes from the people, as set forth in the Constitution.<\/p>\n<p><em>Rule of law<\/em>\u00a0means our government and citizens should be controlled and limited by our laws.<\/p>\n<p><em>Common good<\/em>\u00a0is working together, as citizens, for the greater benefit of all.\u00a0<em>Federalism<\/em>\u00a0is the sharing of powers between national, state and local governments.
