As we begin our year together, I have some important information you need to know about the expectations of this class.\u00a0 First, I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself.\u00a0 My name is Jamy Sherlock and I am honored to be your child\u2019s teacher this year.\u00a0 I earned my Bachelor\u2019s Degree from Eastern Michigan University and my Master\u2019s Degree from Concordia University, in Leadership and Administration. This is my First year teaching in Dearborn Public Schools. It is important for your child to feel <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">safe and comfortable<\/span> because with this comes a well-managed classroom filled with opportunities where children can experience and discover, take risks and implement practices taught by the teacher.\u00a0 My teaching will consist of various types of lessons, being highly sensitive to different learning styles and the diversity of children that exist within any classroom.\u00a0 Also, I find it important and beneficial to integrate all subject matters across the curriculum.\u00a0 I look forward to a very fun and productive year! If your child arrives after 8:40, they will be marked tardy.\u00a0 If your child arrives more than 10 minutes late, they are marked absent and need to be signed in through the office prior to arriving to the classroom.\u00a0 For safety, most of our outside entry doors are locked during the day.\u00a0 YOU MUST SIGN IN AT THE OFFICE IF YOU ARE VISITING THE BUILDING.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, the students will be dismissed out the same doors from the morning.\u00a0 Please do not wait outside our classroom door, as it is distracting to the students.\u00a0 Please decide on a meeting place in the lobby or outside.\u00a0 Your help with this is appreciated and please pass this information on to any other adult who picks up or drops off your child. Please make sure your child is picked up on time.\u00a0 If you are late, your child will be waiting for you in the office, not in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><b>Some important things to know about our classroom:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Student Planner<\/span><\/b>-All students will be bringing home a student planner every night.\u00a0 Each child will write down his\/her homework in the student planner along with any important reminders for parents.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">A parent\/guardian MUST sign the planner every day<\/span>.\u00a0 This ensures that a parent has seen what your child has for homework and makes sure that homework is completed and returned to school. This is one of the most important forms of parent\/teacher communication we have, so please make sure it is checked daily. If the planner gets lost, another can be purchased in the office for $5.00.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Reading<\/span><\/b>-Your child will be expected to read every night.\u00a0 A goal of 20-30 minutes would be appropriate. I understand that students are very busy with after school activities, so try to set up a specific time each day that will work best with your schedule.\u00a0 If there is a night when reading isn\u2019t possible, have your child read extra on a few other nights. There is no specific reading material required. Your child can choose things like a magazine, book, newspaper, article, or stories found online. Whatever your child is reading, you will always want the reading to be meaningful. Your child should be connecting with the literature and hopefully not just reading to get it over with!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Classroom Rules\/P.B.I.S<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>The following is a list of general expectations that I have for all students:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Always do your personal best.<\/li>\n<li>Raise your hand and wait to be called on.<\/li>\n<li>Be an active listener<\/li>\n<li>Use words to solve problems.<\/li>\n<li>Play safely.<\/li>\n<li>Be kind and respectful to everyone.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These objectives will be taught and reinforced consistently.\u00a0 Please take a moment to discuss each of these with your child and review them often, as we will in class.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Snack<\/span><\/b><b>&#8211;<\/b>Children will have the opportunity to eat a snack each day.\u00a0 I will not be providing the snack, so this will need to come from home. <b>All snacks need to be healthy.<\/b>Please do not send in chips, candy, or cookies as a snack.\u00a0 Soda or juice will not be allowed as snacks.\u00a0 I also request that students do not share their snacks with others due to allergies\/religions.\u00a0 Donated snacks are greatly appreciated!<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>In choosing a snack for your child, please keep the following things in mind:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Protein based snacks help your child full and fueled.<\/li>\n<li>Try to avoid snacks that are high in sugar content (i.e. Fruit Roll-Ups, Pop tarts, etc).<\/li>\n<li>Snacks should be independently\/easily handled by your child. Please do not send in items that need to be cut or peeled by an adult.<\/li>\n<li>Some suggestions: fruit or vegetables, cheese and crackers, pretzels, trail mix, yogurt (please provide your own spoon), nuts, and granola bars.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Birthdays<\/span><\/b>-We enjoy celebrating birthdays so please let me know at least a day in advance if you plan on bringing in a special treat for your child to share with the class.\u00a0 The ideal time would be towards the end of the day, but will vary depending on our class schedule.
