Since we missed the halloween parade we (Ms Smith and I) decided we need to at least to have a parade between the 2 classes. Below is a video of our class showing off their costumes to the other kindergarteners!

Week of October 27th

Unit 2: Literacy unit: Friends

Reading: We are reading these stories: Friends all around, Making Friends, The fight, The lion and the mouse, Brer turtle helps out

Strategies from our CAFE menu

  • Comprehension- identifying characters, setting (goal)
  • Accuracy: Identifying the first sound in a word
  • Fluency: Recognize sight words: I we, the, can, recognize letters Aa-Zz
  • Expanding vocabulary-Reading from left to right, Reading from top to bottom, Read from the left page and move to the right page

 Letters of the week:Pp. We will be making  lists  of things that begin with the letter Pp. Please discuss things that begin with the letters Mm, Aa, Ss and Pp

Sight words: a (pronounced “ah,”  not “aye.”)

Review: I, can, we, can, like

Writing: We will be practicing writing all the letters correctly. We will also practice writing sentences. We have been discussing what a good sentence looks like. It begins with a capital, there is space between the words, and it ends with an end mark.  Our focus will be opinion writing.

Math:  We will continue to count everything. we are now writing number 0-20. Your child should be writing numbers correctly and able to give you the next number. We are still working on number 0-20 orally. We are still focusing on tricky teens. We will also explore estimation, different coins and patterns.

Science: We will continue to explore the fall seasons. We will look at pumpkins. We will investigate what they look like and compare them to squash. We will open the pumpkin and record our findings. We will then make a pumpkin craft.

Social Studies: We will continue doing cooperative activities to reinforce team building within our classroom and within our table groups. Cooperation is our key word here!

Notes:

Our Halloween parade is Friday at 1:15 -weather permitting. Your child may still bring in their costume in a bag and after music time we will change.

Wednesday is library day!

Family Movie Night

Tomorrow (Friday, October 24, 2014) is Family Movie Night provided by the PTA. It starts 6-8. Students will have to have parents in order to attend!

We investigated the fall season. We discussed what happens in fall. We also looked at different stories about the fall season. Students brought in leaves and collected additional ones outside. The students took their job seriously. They were observing and collecting information from the different leaves. We will be documenting our information in our science journals! Top It math game

Students were given 10 number cards (0-10) and were paired with a buddy. They were then instructed to pull a card each. The student compared the numbers and whoever had the largest number takes both cards. The one with the most card wins. Below are pictures:

Literacy unit: Families Change

This a Review Week!

Review Letters of the week: Aa/Mm – children will be coming home with an Aa/Mm Book they created.

Writing: We will be practicing writing all the letters correctly. We will also practice writing sentences using our sight words: I, can, we, the. We will tie in reflecting about what we used to do when we are little and what we can do now  in our journals. Encourage your child to share. We will also be making lists.

Math:  We will continue to count everything. we are now writing number 0-10. Your child should be writing numbers correctly and able to give you the next number. We are now working on number 0-15 orally. We will also play games like spin a number. We will also be reviewing basic patterns and be looking for them all around.

Science:  We will review the 5 senses. (sight, touch, hearing, taste, smell). We will explore the fall seasons. We will look at leaves and discuss why they are changing. We will do leaf rubbings. We will focus on the fall colors which are: red, yellow, orange and red.

Social Studies: we are discussing how people change over time. Please send in a picture of your child as a baby. We will discuss what they used to do as a baby and what they could do now.  We will create a list of things, the picture will be a good concrete thing to refer to.

Week of October 7th

Literacy unit: Families get together

Letter of the week: Aa- children will be coming home with an Aa Book they created. We will also review Letter Mm

New Sight word: The, the  (we are identifying the sight word in the beginning of a sentence as well as in the middle of a sentence). Whenever you read a book and come across the word with your child, allow them to read the word we are learning about.

Sight words Review: I, can, we

Writing: We will be practicing writing all the letters correctly. We will also practice writing sentences using our sight words: I, can, we, the. We will tie in reflecting about what we do with our families in our journals. Encourage your child to share.

Math:  We will continue to explore how to sort, count and order numbers. We are going to explore shapes and understand their attributes to their names. For example: 3 sides= a triangle, 4 equal sides= a square etc. We will also practice writing numbers 1-10 correctly

Science:  We will review the 5 senses. (sight, touch, hearing, taste, smell). We will  explore the sense of smell this week and review the sense of touch We will learn to describe how things smell ie. bad, good, sweet, smelly etc.   We will do an investigation on guess what this is by smell.
