This week we will begin a new Module (Module 4!) in our Eureka Math curriculum.  In this Module, you will see a shift from Measurement & Data based problems to Place Value & Number Comparison.  This module will also cover addition and subtraction to 40 – using place value (tens and ones) concepts.

TOPIC C ♦ MODULE 3

WEEK OF 2/18 –  LESSONS 7, 8 & 9

Math Homework this week will cover learning from (Module 3) Lessons 3 (revisit), 7 & 9:

This is the last week I will be sending home the containers of centimeter cubes for students to use while completing their homework.  Next week, we will shift our learning from measurement with objects — to graphing and data-based problems.  Again, please have your child bring the container of cubes BACK to school (along with their homework) this FRIDAY, February 22nd!

  • MODULE 3: Ordering & Comparing Length Measurements as Numbers
  • TOPIC B: Measuring in Non-Standard & Standard Length Units
    • Students will measure the same objects from Topic B, but with different non-standard units (for example: small and large paperclips).  Students will understand the need to use the same length units when comparing their measurements those of their classmates.
    • Students will solve compare with difference unknown word problems using centimeters (centimeter cubes).  They will answer questions such as: “Is the pencil longer than the crayon?” or “How much longer is the pencil than the crayon?”

WEEK OF 2/11 –  LESSONS 3, 4, 5 & 6

  • MODULE 3: Ordering & Comparing Length Measurements as Numbers
  • TOPIC B: Measuring in Standard Length Units
    • Students will measure different objects with the standard length unit: centimeter (cubes).
    • Students will compare and order the lengths of at least three objects from shortest to longest.

This week, I will send home a small container of centimeter cubes for children to use while completing their homework.  Please have your child bring the container of cubes back to school this Thursday (along with their homework) – so we can continue using them in class.  Homework will be due on Thursday since there is no school on Friday!

  • The Commutative Property of Addition (which shows that you can add numbers in any order and the answer will always be the same!).  For example: 2+3=5 OR 3+2=5.  No matter how you add these numbers together, the total will always be the same (because their parts are the same!).

  • Using our knowledge of the equal sign (=) to solve true number sentences that are equal.  For example: 4+2 = 3+3

  • Strategies for ‘Counting On’ when adding (count on from the largest number.)  For example: I can count on 2 from 7 to solve 2+7.

(2018-19) HOMEWORK NEWSLETTER

First Grade students will have weekly Math review as part of their homework routine.  This homework is meant to help students practice skills I have already taught in class and will usually include problems from two math lessons per week.  Please refer to the “Homework Helper” attached to each lesson (see photos below) for step-by-step directions explaining how our First Graders are learning math!   Math homework will be sent home every Monday, and is due on FRIDAY (along with Spelling).
