Dear Families,
\nWelcome to a new school year! I know each year in your child\u2019s
\nschooling presents new expectations and routines for you and your child to\u00a0become familiar with. My goal is to introduce classroom routines and\u00a0structures in a way that removes all of the guesswork from the children and\u00a0allows them to concentrate fully on learning. In reading, the classroom\u00a0structure I use is called \u201cDaily Five\u201d. Soon your child will be talking about \u201cThe\u00a0Daily Five\u201d at home. The purpose of this letter is to explain to you what The Daily Five is and what you should expect to see at home.<\/p>\n

The Daily Five is a literacy structure that teaches independence and
\ngives children the skills needed to create a lifetime love of reading and
\nwriting. It consists of five tasks that are introduced individually. When
\nintroduced to each task, the children discuss what it looks like, sounds like ,and feels like to engage in the task independently. Then, the children work on\u00a0building their stamina until they are successful at being independent while\u00a0doing that task.<\/p>\n

The five tasks include:
\n1. Read to self
\n2. Read to someone
\n3. Listen to reading
\n4. Work on writing
\n5. Word work<\/p>\n

When all five tasks have been introduced and the children are fully
\nengaged in reading and writing activities, I am able to work with small groups\u00a0and confer with children one on one. This structure is effective, the results are\u00a0amazing, and the children really look forward to Daily Five time. Ask your child\u00a0about Daily Five and see what he\/she has to say. I anticipate your child will\u00a0tell you about the class stamina, how we are working towards independence,\u00a0and maybe you will even hear about some of the fantastic things your child\u00a0has written, read, or listened to during our structured reading time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
