Tests are Friday&#8217;s and are always recorded in the student planner. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Student definitions are found in their vocabulary notebooks and are the best definitions to study.&nbsp; I encourage you to practice these words at home with your student!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>absolute location: the address of a location<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>adjective- a word that describes a noun with more detail<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>adverb- a word that describes a verb and often ends in -ly<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>angle- formed when two lines meet at a shared point, measured in degrees<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>area- the amount of space inside a shape<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>area model- an empty rectangle with labeled side lengths left<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>array- a picture that shows groups in rows and columns<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>attract- a force that pulls objects together (i.e., magnets)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>author- the person who wrote a book or paper<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>canal- a human-made river<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>capacity- the amount that a container can hold<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>caption- words that go beside a picture to describe what is in the picture<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>central message- the lesson in a story<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>character trait- what a character is like on the inside; their personality<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>character- someone in a book, story, or movie<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>climate- weather in an area over a long time<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>cloud- a big collection of tiny droplets of water or ice crystals<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>compare- to look at what is the same or different about 2 things<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>compass rose- a feature on a map that shows directions<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>conclusion- the end to a writing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>culture- the customs of a group nation or group of people<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>decompose- to break something down into smaller parts<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>democracy- a type of government where the people hold the power<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>describe- to tell me more details about something<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>details- additional information about the main idea<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>difference- the answer to a subtraction problem<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>digital clock- a clock that uses just numbers, no hands<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>divide- to split up the total into equal groups<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>edit- to fix errors and make it better<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>equation- a number sentence. ex. 5+5=10<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>equivalent- another way to say equal<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>essay- short piece of writing on a specific topic<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>estimate- make a good guess using a strategy to help<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>executive branch- enforces the laws<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>evaporation- the process where liquid water becomes a gas<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>fable- a type of story that it short, has animals as characters, and teaches a moral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>fact- something that is true and can be proven by doing research<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>factors- the numbers that you multiply together<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>fiction- a type of story that is make-believe<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>force- a push or a pull on an object; something that makes things move<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>fossil- the remains of a plant or animal that lived long ago<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>fraction- equal parts of a whole<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>friction- a rubbing force that slows objects down and creates heat<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>genre- a category for a type of text<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>geography- the study of places and what the earth\u2019s surface looks like<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>glossary- text feature that gives definitions for a particular text<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>governor- the leader of a territory or state<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>gram- the smallest unit of weight in the metric system<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>heading- a mini title at the top of a writing that tells you what that part of the writing will be about<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>historian- someone who studies the past<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>history- the study of the past<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>infer- to figure something out using the clues<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>judicial branch- interprets the laws<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>kilogram- a unit of measurement that measures weight and is made from 1,000 grams<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>lead- the beginning to a writing that hooks the readers attention<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>legend- a narrative story that is BASED on real things but is exaggerated and is now not real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>legislative branch- makes the laws<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>liter- a unit of measurement that measures the amount of a liquid and is made from 1,000 milliliters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>location- where something is<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>magnet- a type of rock or metal that can pull certain types of metal to itself<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>main idea- the most important point or idea in a writing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michigan- the name of the state we live in<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>moral- the important lesson of the story<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>motion- a change in position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>multiply- add a number to itself a number of times<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>myth- a type of story that often has characters such as gods and goddesses and are written to explain why something is the way it is<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>narrative- a type of writing that tells a story<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Native American- the first people that lived in North America<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>nonfiction- text that is true and teaches you information about something<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>noun- a word that\u2019s a person, place, thing, or idea<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>number line- a line with numbers that we use in math<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Odawa-  a Native American tribe of the Three Fires, lived in Michigan <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ojibway-  a Native American tribe of the Three Fires, lived in Michigan <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>opinion- a feeling or belief<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>opposites- the most different 2 things can possibly be<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>pan balance- a type of scale that compares weights of objects by trying to make them balance<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>parallel- 2 lines that will NEVER touch<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>partition- to divide something into smaller EQUAL pieces<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>peninsula- a piece of land surrounded on 3 sides by water<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>perimeter- the amount of space around the outside of a shape<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>pioneer- the first people to settle an area<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>plot- the story events or the beginning, middle, and end of a story<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>poem-artistic writing that artistic that creates a mental image<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Potawatomi- a Native American tribe of the Three Fires, lived in Michigan<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>precise- exactly<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>prioritize- doing important things first, then fun things (putting first things first)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>product- the answer to a multiplication problem<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>pronoun- a word that takes the place of a noun such as he, she, I, they\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>publish- the final copy of a writing that the audience will read<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>pull- a force that moves things closer<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>push- a force that moves things away<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>quadrilateral- a closed shape with 4 sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>quotient- the answer to a division problem<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>reason- what you say to explain why<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>region- an area that has something in common with all the other places in that area<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>relative location\u2013a place that is related to another object. Use a compass rose to help find relative location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>repel- a force that moves something away (i.e., magnets)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>republic- a type of government where the people hold the power<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>rhyme- words that share the same ending sounds such as thin and grin<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>round- to change a number to the nearest friendly number like the nearest 10 or the nearest 100<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>selection- the process of making choices to change the outcome<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>services- things that people do for you in exchange for money<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>setting- where a story takes place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>stamina- when you do something for a time and you keep trying to get better<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>stanza-The lines of words and groups of lines in a poem<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>symmetry- when an object looks the same on one side as on the other<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>territory-what an area of land was called that was not a state<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>theme-  the message in a story; the lesson that you learn in a story <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>topic- the subject of a book or writing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>trade- to exchange or switch one item for another item<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>verb- an action word<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>voyager- a person who sailed across waterways to explore and trade<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>water vapor- the gas state of water<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vocabulary words and definitions can be found here in alphabetical order.
