A decision must be made as to whether the child stays home or goes to school.\u00a0What do you do? How do you make the right decision? You don\u2019t want to keep a child home if they aren\u2019t really sick, but you also don\u2019t want to send them to school sick either.\u00a0The following information is not intended as medical advice, but may help you to know when to keep your child home from school. It is merely designed to provide guidelines to be followed until your doctor can be contacted for an opinion.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Most important \u2014 <strong>Use Common Sense<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Do not send your child if they have had a fever within the past 24 hours.<\/div>\n<div>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Do not send your child to school with an illness that could spread.<\/div>\n<div>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Do not send your child if he would be miserable all day or would distract the other children.<\/div>\n<div>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Have \u201cjust in case\u201d care for your child in the event you are unable to stay home with a sick child.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Characteristics of a sick child:<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">APPEARANCE\/BEHAVIOR<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Unusually tired, pale, difficult to wake, confused or irritable, with lack of appetite.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">FEVER<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00b7 Children may not come to school if they have had a fever above normal temperature within the previous 24 hours.\u00a0A fever that has been reduced by medication\u00a0DOES\u00a0NOT\u00a0mean\u00a0that they are fever free.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">COMMON COLD and FLU<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00b7 A long-term, (chronic) greenish nose discharge, and\/or a chronic cough are symptoms that should be seen by a doctor.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">VOMITING &amp; DIARRHEA<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00b7\u00a0 Vomiting within the past 24 hours \u00b7<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0 \u00a0Watery stools in a 24-hour period, especially if your child acts or looks ill.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0 \u00a0Your child may return to\u00a0school after 24 hours without being ill.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">EAR INFECTIONS<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00b7\u00a0 Your child may attend school after receiving medical treatment. (Untreated ear infections can cause permanent hearing loss, and even more serious problems.)<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">EYES<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00b7\u00a0 Thick mucus or pus draining from eye, or pink eye. Your child can attend school 24 hours after starting medical treatment.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">RASH<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00b7\u00a0 Body rash, especially with fever and itching (Unknown rashes should always be diagnosed by a doctor before returning to school).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">HEAD LICE<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00b7 Children cannot return to school until their hair has been treated with lice shampoo and the dead eggs(nits) have been combed out with a special comb.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">SORE THROAT<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00b7\u00a0 Especially with fever, or swollen glands in the neck. Please see guidelines for FEVER.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>If your child will be absent from school for any reason, please notify the school before 8:30 A.M.\u00a0 with a reason why. This will assist the school in keeping track of your child\u2019s whereabouts and provide a record of the types of illness that affect the school.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Please use your own good common sense and notify your child\u2019s physician of any concerns you might have.\u00a0A good rule to follow is \u201c<em><strong>when in doubt, call<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Remember:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><em>SICK CHILDREN BELONG AT HOME\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><em>WELL CHILDREN BELONG AT SCHOOL<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Thank you so much for helping keep our school a safe, and healthy place for all of our students!<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Should I Keep My Child Home?
