{"id":74,"date":"2016-09-07T15:00:34","date_gmt":"2016-09-07T19:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/macarid\/?p=74"},"modified":"2016-09-07T15:00:34","modified_gmt":"2016-09-07T19:00:34","slug":"what-is-the-difference-between-language-and-speech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/macarid\/2016\/09\/07\/what-is-the-difference-between-language-and-speech\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the difference between language and speech?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asha.org\/public\/speech\/development\/language_speech\/\">ASHA: language and speech defined<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Language <\/strong>is made up of socially shared rules that include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What words mean (e.g., \u201cstar\u201d can refer to a bright object in the night sky or a celebrity)<\/li>\n<li>How to make new words (e.g., friend, friendly, unfriendly)<\/li>\n<li>How to put words together (e.g., \u201cPeg walked to the new store\u201d rather than \u201cPeg walk store new\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>What word combinations are best in what situations (\u201cWould you mind moving your foot?\u201d could quickly change to \u201cGet off my foot, please!\u201d if the first request did not produce results)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Speech <\/strong>is the verbal means of communicating.
