Only 3 lines. And each line of the poem has a certain number of syllabus. The first line has 5 syllables, the second line has 7 syllables, and the third line has 5 syllables again. 5, 7, 5. They don’t HAVE to rhyme. But sometimes I like to try and make the last word of my 1st and 3rd lines rhyme.

“But, Mrs. Kruger, WHAT IS A SYLLABLE?” I’m glad you asked.

A syllable is one part, or unit, of the pronunciation of a word. When you pronounce, or say, a word – it has small sound parts that go together. Here’s a silly little video to explain if you aren’t sure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvcgVRULaWw

SO. Here is an example of a little haiku.

Hello sweet students,
Are you missing crazy class?
Go draw a picture!

Hello is pronounced, hel-lo. It has 2 syllables. Are you getting it? Great!

If you can’t think of a TOPIC for your haiku – I love to just start with an observation using my senses. What is something I hear, see, smell, or feel around me. The sound of birds chirping out the window. That’s a great first line: “Birds chirping outside”. So go right a silly little poem. Or a serious poem. And then make a picture for it. If you do – send me a picture of it! I can’t wait to see. 🙂

Something I LOVE to do, that’s a fun, really fast and easy drawing activity is – writing a short haiku poem and then coming up with a picture to go with it.
