Dearborn Public Schools is closed for Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. I will still be posting a Friday Field Trip and on Saturday I am posting a story of Eid. My next regular activity post will be on Tuesday May 26th. Let’s get ready for today’s activities…

Letter of the Week

Our letter this week is Pp. It makes the puh sound and we write P with a big line and a little curve.

When you are outside today look for items that start with the letter P. Also check out signs in your neighborhood. See if there are any signs that have p’s on them.

Math

Today we are going to talk about time. More specifically “How long is a minute?” If you have a timer or stop watch you can use that. You can also use a second hand on a clock or a timer on your phone. Get a piece of paper and a pencil. Ask your child some “how long does it take” questions and write down their answers. How long does it take to… brush your teeth? write your name? put your shoes on? eat a snack? Now show them the timer or stop watch or clock and tell them you are going to time them. Have them march until they think a minute is over. When they stop, stop the timer and talk about if it was more than a minute or less than a minute. Have your child write their name and how long they marched. Talk about 1 minute being 60 seconds. Now have them march for 1 minute. Tell them you are going to start the timer and they will march and you will tell them when 1 minute is done. Now one more time march while counting to 60. That is 1 minute! As you do any of the activities above, brushing teeth, writing name, putting shoes on or eating a snack look at their estimates and use a timer while they are doing the activity.

Work Time

Turn off those screens and play with some toys, color, paint… anything you can think of!

Planning Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s ability to organize their time by having them make a “plan” with you about what they would like to play with. Children do this everyday with us at school. Make sure to get your book before you start the read aloud and you can turn the pages in your book of Giggle, Giggle, Quack!

<iframe loading="lazy" title="Owen by Kevin Henkes.
