Children need to learn to notice the distinctive features of&nbsp; a letter and what makes it different from another letter.&nbsp; Orientation also makes a difference. For example, d and b look very similar.&nbsp; A child might make a mistake in using these letters wrong, it doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that they are \u201cseeing\u201d the letters wrong, just they do not yet see the importance of direction. (<em>Literacy Beginnings,<\/em>page 185)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Making sure that children have the opportunity to sort letters is essential.&nbsp; Explicitly teaching how to sort is very important.
