Monday Homework

Tomorrow’s homework will be a worksheet where they have to write a subtraction sentence to match the picture. They also have to write commas in the correct place in the sentence.

Over the break, I looked closely at their NWEA scores. I am able to see the areas that they find challenging. I will be assigning lessons to each student on MOBY MAX as soon as I figure out how to do so 🙂 Also, I will be sending packets home which focus on the skills that were difficult for them on the NWEA test. I hope this helps, but please do not hesitate to set up a time to talk with me and we can look more closely at areas of concern. Have a great night!

February 26

Hello Families!
I hope you are all enjoying your break. If you stayed in Michigan, it has been super wet. If you traveled, I hope you had a fantastic vacation and that you return safely. Although it has been relaxing, I sure do miss my class! Here are our plans for next week:

Spelling
Words
1. where
2. what
3. when
4. why
5. which
6. white
7. wheel
8. very
9. your
10. its

ELA: We are taking a bit of a break from informational books. We will read fiction (made up) stories which have characters, settings, and plots (beginning, middle, and end). This week, we will learn how to identify who is telling the story. When the character tells the story, this is called first person and we notice words such as I, I’m, me, my, us, we, I’ve. Also, we will compare and contrast nonfiction and fiction books by looking closely at their text features. I am working on a powerpoint and will upload it when it is ready 🙂

Math: We are learning to use what we know about addition problems to solve subtraction problems. We are also continuing to use what we know about fact families to solve for the missing addend.

Social Studies: We are continuing to learn about maps. I encourage you to look at maps with your child and talk about features such as the symbols, key, legend, etc. There are several books on Myon about maps, and you can look at maps online as well. They will be constructing maps of our classroom from an aerial view. We will also learn the difference between places with an absolute location (locations with addresses such as homes, buildings, schools, etc.) and places without absolute locations such as trees, cars, shrubs etc.

Have a great weekend!

Thursday Homework

Tonight’s homework is another assignment on balancing equations. If you don’t have scissors or glue at home, just have your child draw a line to show where the number goes. They must also circle rhyming words. Surprisingly, this was a challenge for many students on a practice NWEA test yesterday.

They must also add commas in the correct place. This will be tricky for them, so you can help with this and watch the video below 🙂

All of the videos that I post will help them gain skills necessary to help them become better readers, writers, and test takers.

Week of Feb. 12

Good Morning, Families!
I hope you are staying safe and warm. Here are our plans for next week:

Spelling
Words
1. spot
2. spill
3. speed
4. stop
5. stick
6. fast
7. old
8. by
9. after
10. going

ELA (reading and writing): We are continuing to read nonfiction texts and we are learning how to use text features such as glossaries, tables of contents, headings, and photos to locate and gather information. We are talking about ways that texts about the same topic are similar and different. Also, we are learning how to look for and record information about a topic in order to write an informational piece with a topic sentence, key details (at least two facts), and a closing sentence.

Math: This week, we will be focusing on understanding the meaning of the equal sign. Students are learning to make sure that both sides of the equal sign are exactly the same. We are learning to use the equal sign to decide whether equations are true or false. I will send a packet home on Monday. These are optional and intended to challenge your child and prepare him/her for the spring NWEA test.

Social Studies: This week, we will complete our social studies assessment. Many students have taken the first part of the test already and have done great! This week, they will be asked to write about a time that they needed and/or wanted something. They will have to be able to explain the difference between a consumer and producer. They will have to be able to write a list of ways that people earn money.

Valentine’s Day: Students may bring in a WRAPPED treat on Wednesday, February 14. They may also bring in Valentine’s Day cards to pass out. We have 22 students in our class 🙂

Thursday homework

Tonight’s homework is a worksheet where students use the “make a ten” strategy to solve problems. Please see the example.
