Hi Parents,<\/p>\n

We are done with our first full week of school and it was wonderful!\u00a0 I have such an amazing class this year.\u00a0 It is a small class and all the children are so sweet, kind, inquisitive, and helpful.\u00a0 I am a very lucky teacher to have such a great class!!<\/p>\n

I’m sorry this blog is rather long, but I want to explain everything to the new people in our class.\u00a0 I will try to keep them shorter in the future.\u00a0 If you are not new to my room, please try to read it all anyway because there are some new things I am adding this year and some changes.<\/p>\n

Below is a quick peek and what we covered this week in each subject.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Science<\/strong> – I am teaching science to my class and Mrs. Polster’s class.\u00a0 If you are in Mrs. Polster’s class please subscribe to my blog.\u00a0 Go to iblog.dearbornschools.org\/Keebler.<\/a>\u00a0 We are studying Earth science- I started the week with the Montessori Great Lesson about the creation of the Universe, this ended with the explosion of our volcano, this led into the study of our earth.\u00a0 Each student has started\u00a0 Earth Science Research reports.<\/p>\n

2nd Grade Math<\/strong> – Mrs. Polster is teaching all the 2nd graders math for both our classes.\u00a0\u00a0 To find out more details please subscribe to Ms. Polster’s blog.\u00a0 iblog.dearbornschools.org\/polstel<\/a>, put your email in the subscription\u00a0 box.<\/strong><\/p>\n

3rd Grade Math<\/strong> – We started with a pretest for unit one, we started with sequencing larger numbers, and started time and measurement.<\/p>\n

Language Arts<\/strong> – We started our Daily 5\/CAFE, we are working on building our stamina to read for longer periods of time.\u00a0 I have started doing reading tests to see what level everyone should be reading.<\/p>\n

Writing<\/strong>– Writer’s workshop, topic list and journal, narrative about something in our lives.\u00a0 I would encourage everyone to have a writing journal and home and to write for 5 minutes at least every night.\u00a0 Don’t worry about their spelling.\u00a0 Let them get their ideas down on paper and then we will fix spelling when they do their editing.<\/p>\n

Field trip<\/strong> – We have our first field trip on September 25th.<\/strong>\u00a0 You should have gotten the permission slip on Friday in the red Parent Folder.\u00a0 Permission slips are due by Friday, September 19th.<\/strong> We are going to the Hands-On Museum in Ann Arbor.\u00a0 We will be gone most of the day so please pack a lunch.\u00a0 There is not a place to buy food at this museum.\u00a0 The trip is $10 per person.\u00a0 Chaperoning is encouraged but no siblings please.\u00a0 We will not have room for all the chaperones on the bus so I encourage carpooling with another family.\u00a0\u00a0 The museum does not have a parking lot, there is some street parking, or there is a parking structure just down the street.\u00a0 https:\/\/www.aahom.org\/visit\/directions-and-parking<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 Just click on this link to see the map.<\/p>\n

Homework<\/strong> is starting this week.\u00a0 Students will have spelling, reading logs, writing journal and math fact practice.\u00a0 I will explain each one below.\u00a0 Homework should not be taking more that 20 minutes for 2nd graders or 30 minutes for 3rd graders.\u00a0 Research shows that too much homework can be detrimental to students.\u00a0 We work hard all day and need to rest our minds.\u00a0 If your student can’t complete the assignments in the allotted time please email me and we will talk about ways to reduce it.<\/p>\n

Reading Logs<\/strong>– You should have received your 1st reading log.\u00a0\u00a0 2nd graders read at least 10 minutes a day,\u00a0 3rd graders at least 15 minutes a day.\u00a0 Record it on the log and parent initial that your child read.\u00a0 On the back they should write down 4 of the books they read during the month and then write one of the CAFE strategies for each book and how they used that strategy.\u00a0 They are listed at the top of the page.<\/p>\n

Spelling<\/strong> – You should have received your child’s spelling list.\u00a0 The activities are at the top and the spelling words are at the bottom.\u00a0 Each child will have different types of words. The activities are things that you can do at home.\u00a0 Please turn in only the green activity sheet on Thursdays<\/strong>.\u00a0 Parents are to check that they did the activities correctly and just initial the box so I know that it is complete.\u00a0 Spelling tests will be on Fridays.<\/strong><\/p>\n
