Dear Parents,<\/p>\n
I want to let you know about a few of the things we are doing today for MLK Day so that if students come home and tell you the story, you hear it from me as well.\u00a0 I’ve done this in the past and am doing it today. We have read about and discussed books about Martin Luther King Jr. In an effort to have students feel a little bit of what unfair feels like I’m having the boys do school work while the girls get to have recess because “girls are better than boys”. I heard many great comments coming from the boys, “this is not fair” , “I’m telling my mom\/dad” “well boys can skate faster than girls”, “this isn’t think win, win”. I’ve asked the boys how they are feeling and they did a great job expressing themselves. Later today, the boys will get candy or gum and play on the computer while the girls have to take the spelling test because “boys are better than girls”. We will then discuss how they felt and put it onto a graphic organizer. We will also compare and contrast blue and green M and M’s using a Venn Diagram and explore how they are different on the outside but the same on the inside and how this relates to humans.<\/p>\n
Later today the girls will have to do the work the boys did and the boys will take the spelling test.<\/p>\n
I’m sending home a sheet for students to read on Monday about Martin Luther King Jr. Please take a moment out of the day to honor him and the work he has done for our Country by reading and discussing the article.<\/p>\n
