Week of February 29

Week of February 29

We had sooooo much fun on our Field Trip this past Friday.  Thank you to everyone who joined us!  The snow day and the field trip changed a few things last week, so we will be playing catch up this week!

This week begin March is Reading Month.  I am sure you saw the calendar that was sent home last week with some activities to do each day to encourage reading!  Our theme this year is “Leaders are Readers”.  This theme correlates with the Leader in Me initiative we have begun at Snow this year.  We will be having a myon competition.  More info will be coming home soon!

We have not gotten the lunch calendars for March yet.  Hopefully, I will get them tomorrow.  Just remember that the lunch calendars are on the school website in case you misplace yours.

This week in…

Language Arts, we will be focusing on the reading strategy of main idea and key details.  We will be looking at non- fiction texts to help us with the use of the strategy.  We will be finishing our “how to” about making a pizza.  We will also begin brainstorming ideas for a new non fiction writing we will be starting this week.

Math, we will be practicing with our fact triangles and completing unit 6.  We have been working on our fact fluency daily and I am so proud of the students and their accomplishments!

Social Studies, we will be working on the Flat Stanley project we didn’t get to last week because of the snow day.  We will also be studying the map of the Science Museum to reinforce our study of maps.

Some of the students need new crayons in their pencil boxes.  I am also encouraging students to get some colored pencils for their boxes too!  Please ask your child what supplies he/she needs replenished.  Thank you in advance.

Have a wonderful week!

Week of 2/22

Please make sure your child brings a bagged lunch for that day.  We will not be going to the gift shop, so the students do not need any money.   Chaperones- If you do not have a background check on file in the office, you will just have your child in your group.

Tomorrow we are making pizzas with Ms. Stetz’s class in preparation of our “How To” writing.  We will begin the pizza making around 9:00 if anyone would like to join us.

Week of 2/15

Week of 2/15

I hope everyone had a chance to spend some time with your families over the winter break…before you know it, it will be spring break!

This week we are starting some new units in math, science, AND social studies.

In Language Arts, we are finishing our How To and beginning a quick informational writing piece.  I have been discussing “non-negotiables” with the students. I have said that any word we have had for spelling (pattern word or sight word) should not be misspelled in our writing.  I explained that the students need to be more aware as they write and responsible for using word walls and quick word books.  We will be focusing on the following strategies in reading:  creating mental images as you read, text to self and text to text connections, and asking questions as you read.  OUr spelling pattern this week is the cl- family.

In Math, we are beginning Unit 6 which focuses on addition and subtraction facts and strategies.  By now, the students should be able to add up to 5 with mental math.  We are going to be on Mobymax daily to focus on fact fluency.  Your child can always practice mobymax at home too!  This week in math, we will be investigating the facts table, equivalent names for addition facts, fact families and subtraction strategies.

In Social Studies, we will be focusing on maps and globes and locations for this unit.  This week, we will be creating a map of the class, discussing absolute location and using personal directions to explain directions.

In Science, our focus will be the sun!  We will be discussing how to sun is a source of warmth this week.  It looks like the sun will be working hard by the end of the week!  It is supposed to be 50 degrees on Friday!

Have a great week!

Week of 2/8

Week of 2/8

It is a new semester!  The report cards are being sent home with the NWEA results on Monday.  If you have any questions about either, please let me know!

We have a winter break this week Friday and next Monday.  No school on 2/12 and 2/15.    We will be having a Valentine treat on Thursday.  All students can bring in Valentines to pass out on this day.  It is also our 100th day of school. I am also sending home baggies for your child to fill with 100 items ( for example… cheerios, pony tail holders, etc..)

We were visited by the Superintendent last week.  Dr. Maleyko spent some time looking at the student goals we wrote for the third semester.  I am very proud of the students’ investment in their learning!!!

This week in…

Language Arts, we are working on writing a “how to” about building a snowman.  (If only we had snow!)  We are working on expanding our vocabulary and incorporating adjectives into our writing.  We will be taking placement tests on Moby Max in Reading  so that students can practice on this site daily.
