Week of Nov. 30

Week of Nov. 30

Welcome back!  It seems like we have been off from school for a looooooong time!  We have three weeks and then a holiday break!  WOW.  Time is flying!

Tomorrow we will have an anti-bullying assembly presented by the Detroit Lions at 2:00 in the gym.   Parents are welcome to join us.  I am going into my husband’s closet and borrowing a Lions shirt for the day!  Lions gear or Snow school wear is encouraged.

Looking ahead….Mr. Stinson is planning a First Grade concert on Dec. 16 in the evening.  He will be sending more info soon, but I wanted you to set the date aside!

We will be going to the Holiday Shop on December 8 at 9:00.  the information about this will be sent this week.

This week in…

Language Arts, we will be focusing on non-fiction text.  We will be spending time looking at the features of non-fiction text and how we interpret it.  We will be creating anon-fiction book in science about weather tools.  We will also focus on parts of speech such as nouns, verbs and adjectives!  We have already covered nouns and verbs so these should be a review.  Look on youtube.com for the verb rap song!  The kids love this song and it is a great learning experience for them.

Math, we are beginning our new unit.  The tests the students took last week will be returned tomorrow.  Please sign and return it on Tuesday.  We had a bunch of students absent on Friday that will take the test on Monday and get it returned on Tuesday.  This week we will focus on frames and arrows, measurement and dimes.  Please send in 10 dimes in a baggie with your child’s name on it for math time.

Social Studies, we will be reviewing for a test on goods and services and needs and wants.

Science, we will be creating weather through experiments!

Have a great week!

Thanksgiving Feast

Thanksgiving Feast

We had a fun day today!   First we made our soup and then donated canned food to a family in need.  Then we got on our Thanksgiving  hats and headed to the feast where we ate soup and made Thanksgiving bracelets and yummy turkeys!!!   Thank you for all the donations and to everyone who helped today!   It was a lot of fun!

Short week of Nov. 23!

Short week of Nov. 23!

This is a short week for us!  The students will have school on Monday and Tuesday and then have five glorious days to spend with their families!

We will not have a spelling list this week.  We will focus on past lists and add the suffixes -ed and -ing to the words that are action verbs.

Just a reminder…we will be going outside for recess this week.  If your child wants to go in the areas with snow, he/she needs to have the proper gear (snowpants, boots, hats, gloves) or they will need to stay on the blacktop area.

You can now practice the NWEA standardized test at home!  It is just four easy steps:

  1. Just go to the district website…www.dearbornschools.org
  2. Click on the tab that says “students” at the top.
  3. Click NWEA RIT practice.
  4. You can find practice tests based on your child’s RIT score (Look on the standardized test sheets that I passed out at conferences)

This week in…

Language Arts, we will be brainstorming and learning about proper nouns and verbs.  We will again be working with the District tech person, Mrs. Gwizdz, to create Google slides about different types of weather.  Did you see the slides the students created last week about the things they are thankful for?!  If you didn’t have a chance, look on the previous post and click on your child’s name.  They created the cover slide, learned to take a “selfie”, wrote and typed the slides and chose backgrounds and images.   The students really focused and worked hard.  I was so proud of them.

Math, we will continue to review the study guide on Monday in preparation for the test on Tuesday.

Social Studies, we are discussing goods and services.  We are also focusing on the First Thanksgiving and look forward to the reading about Thanksgiving from Mrs. Slater’s class at the feast on Tuesday.  We will be feasting and creating a Thanksgiving treat on Tuesday at 2:00 in the cafeteria.  We do have a Leader in Me assembly at 1:30, so we are hoping to be in the cafeteria as close to 2:00 as possible.  If you can volunteer to help serve soup, please let me know!  We will be making the soup in the morning, so please make sure you send your feast donation by Tues. morning.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!  I am so excited to eat all of my favorite foods and spend time with my family and friends!  I am thankful for your support everyday and all the little smiling faces (with lots of missing teeth!) that greet me each day!  I am blessed.

Week of Nov. 15

Week of Nov. 15

What a beautiful weekend! I hope everyone got a chance to get outside and enjoy the sunshine! It is amazing to think that we got snowed on at recess on Friday. The weather is crazy this year!

This Wednesday is a late start day. School begins at 9:35.

We are still collecting change for Pennies for Pasta. The box is outside our classroom.

All of the first grade classes will be having a Friendship Fest next Tuesday. We will be making vegetable soup and creating the Thanksgiving story retell bracelets and apple turkeys. Look for the note coming home in your child’s homework folder for more information. The time on this activity is still not quite set because we are waiting for approval for the cafeteria.

This week, I will be sending home a log in for a reading site called myon. The students have been using it in class to listen to reading as part of our Daily 5. The students can log in and choose the book they would like to listen to. The tricky part is that some books have questions after the story, but the program does not read the questions to the students so it can be difficult for them. Overall, the students are loving listening to the stories based on the genre they like. The site is called myon.com. The log in is the students’ number and the password is their birthdate (month, date and year….ex- 04241971) I will be creating cards for the students to use at home. Please keep it in their folder for easy access.

This week in…
Language Arts, we are working on informational text. We will be working with the District Technology coach this week to create Google Slides with the theme All About …. This is a beginning lesson for us and I hope to take this information and us it with the students during their bigger research projects.

Math, we are working on addition and subtraction on the number line, time to the half hour, frames and arrows, and tens and ones. We will be having a math test next Tuesday on Unit 3. The study guide will be sent later in the week to prepare for the test.

Science, we will be studying weather words, patterns and how to make a rain cloud. Look for pictures later in the week on this project!

Social Studies, we will be focusing on producers and consumers and scarcity.

Have a wonderful week!
