Week of 10/28

Week of 10/28

Boo!  I am sure the students are getting very excited about Halloween!  We will be having a small party the last hour of the day on Halloween. The parade through the Hallways will begin at 2:45.  Please have your child bring in his/her costume to school and we will be changing later in the day.  Please do not send your child with any masks, weapons or “extras” to the costume such as wands, swords etc.    Thank you for the treats that were sent in.  We will be making a witches brew!

Last week you received a flat box in your child’s folder.  The school is collecting Pennies for Pasta.  The money collected will go to the Leukemia Foundation.  The class with the most money raised will earn a trip to Olive Garden for lunch!  Please have your child bring in the money any time this week.

We are still collecting pictures of students at a location such as Disney, the park, etc  for a class writing project.  If you did not send in your child’s picture, please do so by Wednesday.

This week in…

Literacy, we are beginning to write opinion writings.  The students are learning that everyone does not need to have the same opinion!  Our focus letters are Hh and Kk and the sight word is “it”.  I am beginning to send leveled book bags with the students this week who are ready for reading.

Math, we are focusing on tallies, addition problem solving, estimation and symmetry.  We are also continuing to focus on the ten frame and the ability to recognize the amounts on the frame quickly.  We are in need of some empty egg cartons for sorting money and gold fish crackers (any flavor)for problem solving.

Have a great week and Halloween!  I will not be sending homework on Thursday!  Happy trick or treating!

Week of Oct. 21

Week of Oct. 21

Brrrrr….It is very cold!  Please make sure your child dresses for the weather since we do go outside everyday unless it is raining!  I have been having the students try to zip their own coats and sweatshirts before we go out.  I advise them to try three times before asking a friend or myself for help.

We will have gym class on Tuesday this week because of the MEAP schedule changes.

We will not be able to check out books from the Media Center tomorrow either because of the MEAP testing.  I know it has been three weeks, but we will begin our regular schedule next week!

The teachers have decorated pumpkins and they are displayed in the lobby.  These pumpkins will be raffled off and the proceeds will be donated to a charity.  Starting on Wednesday, the students can buy tickets for the raffle for 25cents each.

Just a reminder, there is Book Bingo this Friday in the cafeteria from 6:30-8.  The doors open at 6:15.  The cost per player is $3 and everyone leaves with a book or two!

This week in…

Literacy, our sight word is “you” and our focus letters are Rr and Nn.  The students are doing well practicing the songs of the sight words from the purple list and are beginning to incorporate them into their writing.  We are still writing personal narratives which is a wonderful tie in to our Social Studies and learning about ourselves .  The students completed All About Me posters and they are displayed in the hallway by the art room in case you would like to see them.  I would like all of the students to bring in a picture of themselves by Friday at a place they remember.  For example, maybe they are at the beach or a park or Disney.  We will be using these pictures for a project so they might not be returned in the same condition.  (So please make a copy if it is a favorite of yours!)

Math, we are working with coins, one to one correspondence, beginning our number books, more and less and tally marks.  Please continue to practice counting with your child daily.  We have started a strategy math game that your child will be bringing home to play with you this week called “Rotten Apples”.  I am trying to promote critical thinking in many area of the class and it is especially essential in math!

Science, our focus will be on pumpkins and living things!  We will be reading about pumpkins from our Scholastic Readers and then digging into a pumpkin later in the week!  We will be using our five senses to describe the pumpkin and its qualities.

Have a wonderful week!

The Roller skating party is tonight from 6-8 at the Lincoln Park Skating rink so I did not give homework because it will be a late night.

Tomorrow is the first day for Kindergarten Computer Club. If your child is signed up, you do not need to come at the end of the day to take him/her to the computer lab. Please just show up at 4:45 at the computer lab to pick up your child! The students will be coming every other week due to the high demand of students interested in the club.

Dear Kindergarten Parents of Computer Club Students,

We have had an overwhelming response to the Kindergarten Computer Club! Therefore, we will need to put the students into two groups.  The students will meet every other week to ensure each child has a computer and time to meet with me.  Below you will find the groups and the schedule until the end of December.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

The students will stay with me right after school and will need to be picked up at the computer room door at 4:45.  As with any school function, I will expect the students to follow the behavior matrix.

Thank you and I look forward to working with your child after school!
