{"id":229,"date":"2014-11-10T14:18:02","date_gmt":"2014-11-10T19:18:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/?p=229"},"modified":"2014-11-10T14:22:59","modified_gmt":"2014-11-10T19:22:59","slug":"the-elderly-help-or-struggle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/2014\/11\/10\/the-elderly-help-or-struggle\/","title":{"rendered":"The Elderly: Help or Struggle?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Zeinat Nasser assists her mother, Nahla Nasser<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How many senior citizens have died this year due to the lack of help?\u00a0<strong>Many elders have died of\u00a0heart\u00a0disease, cancer, heart attacks, and strokes.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Senior citizens are dying about every minute and their death rate went up to 800,000 elders per year just in the United States according to consumer.healthday.com.<\/strong>\u00a0Senior citizens are suffering and dying and we can do so many things to help them.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Senior citizens spend $18,424 on personal health care according to seniorliving.org. They don\u2019t have jobs and some elders don\u2019t even have kids to rely on. Many elders choose to not even get health care because of this amount of money. Senior citizens get put into very serious situations so they need health care.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A serious situation is when the seniors fall. Many seniors get broken bones and surgery just because they fall. Elders have very sensitive bones which cause these injuries. Seniors also have a risk of getting the flu and with no health care, they will be suffering on their own with no one to help! \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_231\" style=\"width: 165px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2014\/11\/nahla.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-231\" class=\"size-full wp-image-231\" src=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2014\/11\/nahla.jpg\" alt=\"Nahla Nasser\" width=\"155\" height=\"207\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-231\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nahla Nasser, 85 years old<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Nahla Nasser is a Dearborn resident senior citizen struggling to walk, hear, and see. She is 85 years old and is struggling to do almost everything. For the interview question on how her family helps her, she responded with the answer, \u201cIt takes at least three members of my family just to help me get out of bed in the morning and I also struggle just to use the bathroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another question that she did not mind answering was how many times has she fallen and couldn\u2019t get up, she slowly thought, then responded with a shocking answer: at least two times a month. \u201cI was screaming, crying and begging anyone for help hoping I would live to see another day,\u201d she said. This just goes to show how much she needs help every day in her life.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most important members in Nahla Nasser\u2019s family is her daughter Zeinat Nasser, a Dearborn finance worker, 37. \u00a0\u201cWe had to gather all the money possible from my sisters and brothers just to provide a wheelchair that an insurance company should \u00a0cover\u201d \u00a0but didn\u2019t, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Fadia Agemy, another Dearborn resident senior citizen, struggles with back pain and vision problems. She feels like everything in her life has been slowed down and taken away from her ever since her health began to decline. She is at the age of 63 and is just starting to notice these problems.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_232\" style=\"width: 286px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2014\/11\/ALI-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-232\" class=\"size-full wp-image-232\" src=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2014\/11\/ALI-2.jpg\" alt=\"Fadia Agemy, 63 years old\" width=\"276\" height=\"207\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-232\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">63 year old Fadia Agemy has noticed a decline in her health.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Also, she has just become a new senior citizen and already has to deal with problems that take away advantages. Fadia\u2019s answer to the question about why senior\u2019s refuse to get help is, \u201cIt is because we think we can do stuff on our own but we really don\u2019t know how much help that we need because it makes us feel weak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also has some thoughts about whether\u00a0retirement homes are useful for seniors. \u201cRetirement homes are very useful and helpful but it depends on the specific place,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_233\" style=\"width: 165px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2014\/11\/ALI-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-233\" class=\"size-full wp-image-233\" src=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2014\/11\/ALI-3.jpg\" alt=\"RN Sahar Taleb speaks about  helping the elderly\" width=\"155\" height=\"207\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-233\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">RN Sahar Taleb speaks about helping the elderly<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Another very important person in Fadia Agemy\u2019s life and practically every other senior citizens life in Dearborn is Registered Nurse Sahar Taleb. She is very experienced with\u00a0how senior\u2019s struggle and how it affects them.
