{"id":1934,"date":"2017-06-12T04:47:28","date_gmt":"2017-06-12T08:47:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/?p=1934"},"modified":"2017-08-31T15:13:01","modified_gmt":"2017-08-31T19:13:01","slug":"why-so-misogynistic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/2017\/06\/12\/why-so-misogynistic\/","title":{"rendered":"Why so Misogynistic?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have\u00a0you ever been told that you can\u2019t throw a football or do something a certain way because you\u2019re a girl? Or that it&#8217;s shameful for a woman to stay out late? Those things would be considered as misogyny. Misogyny&#8217;s direct definition is &#8220;meaning having prejudice or being against women.&#8221; Even though women have been able to vote for more than 96 years, it seems as if they still feel like they are being held back from many things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feminism is a belief in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">political, economic, and social equality of the sexes. Contrary to what some might believe, feminism isn\u2019t about giving more rights to women that men don\u2019t have, but simply giving everybody the equality they deserve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cFeminism should be considered as something important in today\u2019s society because it\u2019s able to advance with us if only it didn\u2019t take so long for us to realize that.\u201d Observed Haneen Alaouie, a student at STEM Middle School.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not just women though fighting for their rights, men also want to see to it that girls can be treated as fairly as them. \u201cI think it\u2019s unfair that someone would get paid less just because of who they are,\u201d announced Omar Salim, who considers himself as a feminist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s annoying how guys get to go out late at night and have a late curfew when I would get in trouble for doing the exact same thing,\u201d complains Zeinab Jouni. Other things she\u2019s noticed as a girl is how she\u2019s treated about sports. \u201cI usually hear mean comments about me like \u2018you can\u2019t play basketball because you&#8217;re short and a girl\u2019 or \u2018Wow, you play good for a girl\u2019. Why should those comments even cross people&#8217;s minds?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the little things that girls can get attacked for something as simple as how they dress. Haneen makes a valid point when saying \u201cA girl should be able to wear whatever she wants without being shamed or called a prude. As long as it makes her feel good and powerful, society shouldn\u2019t see anything wrong with it.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another thing that comes to mind is how women have to be cautious of stereotypes that can really affect young girls and women. \u201cWhen I was younger I was always afraid of not looking girly enough or having enough frills in my dress. I am glad that I realized how stupid that all seemed as I got older.\u201d recalled Jouni.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who believe that women enough with what they have even though it is less are considered as misogynistic and sexist. A message that Jouni would like to get across to those people is \u201cYes, we can play basketball, and yes we can be body builders.
