It may not seem like a big deal to some people, but being shy or having social anxiety whether it\u2019s diagnosed or not, can be a problem to some people, especially in a classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stuttering when ordering pizza over the phone or not being able to build up courage to ask for directions does tend to affect you the same way as if you were presenting of a classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2017\/04\/IMG_6224.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1804 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2017\/04\/IMG_6224-169x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"169\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2017\/04\/IMG_6224-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2017\/04\/IMG_6224-577x1024.jpg 577w, https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2017\/04\/IMG_6224-280x497.jpg 280w, https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2017\/04\/IMG_6224.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><\/a>\u201cJust the thought of messing up the presentation gets me worried that I\u2019ll end up embarrassing myself in front of the class.\u201d Zeinab Altawainy\u2019s description wasn\u2019t too far off from symptoms commonly found in a person going through social anxiety stated by mayoclinic.org \u201cSymptoms include excess fear of situation where one may be\u2026 worried about embarrassment or humiliation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mariam Shenaq, an 8th grader here at Unis Middle School, seems to have a similar description when it comes to describing how they feel when put on the spot. \u201cMy voice tends to crack and if I\u2019m standing up, my legs feel weak\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2017\/04\/IMG_6268.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1803 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2017\/04\/IMG_6268.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"246\" height=\"314\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI really don\u2019t like it when a teacher calls on me in class. There are times where even if I know the answer, I feel to shy to speak up or raise my hand.\u201dsays Shenaq. It may seem unfortunate to some students, but there are reasons to why some teachers choose to select certain kids. \u201c(Choosing particular students) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helps me keep some students on the same page as the rest of the class.\u201d Mrs. Issa explained, a language arts teacher for our middle school. Nevertheless, students don\u2019t always have to feel outside of their comfort zone \u201cI always respect their requests, but I also allow opportunities for them to participate with ease.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2017\/04\/ms-issa.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1805 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2017\/04\/ms-issa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"140\" height=\"140\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I understand that it must be nerve racking to speak up when you\u2019re a typically shy person, but fortunately, Altawainy gives us some advice on how to deal with it. \u201cYou can try your best to not look at the people and focus on whatever you\u2019re saying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As long as it doesn\u2019t get in the way of your goals in life, I think that you got it under control.\u201d Believes Shenaq.<\/p>\n<p>By Zainab Alnajim<\/p>\n<p>Middle School Journalist<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to healthland.time.com, nearly 1 in 8 shy teens may have some sort social phobia, making it more common than we think.
