Teens who stay up late could face academic, emotional problems later on. Students are normally up due to homework, texting their friends or late sports practices. 14% of students arrive late or miss school because they overslept. A new study also shows that teens that stay up on school nights can gain weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">28 percent of students fall asleep in school<\/span><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One student who sleeps in class is Husain Dabaja, an 8th grader at Unis Middle school. Husain said he stays up until 12 to 1 A.M. on school nights.\u00a0\u201cWhen I stay up, I\u2019m normally watching TV, on my phone, or I&#8217;m doing my homework.\u201d New research finds that teens that stay up on cell phones at night are losing sleep time and sleep quality. \u201cSometimes I am late to school because I overslept,\u201d he said. She sleeps at 9:30 to 10:30 P.M. on school nights and wakes up at 5:30 to 6:00 A.M. \u201cThe latest I\u2019ve slept on a school night was 11 P.M.,\u201d she said. \u201cI can\u2019t really sleep late, I don\u2019t normally stay up on weekends either.\u201d Kids who get enough sleep most likely will do good in school. \u201cMy GPA in school is around a 3.8 to a 4.0,\u201d Hanna said. \u201cI think sleep can affect a student\u2019s education because when u get less sleep, you can\u2019t really focus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2017\/03\/IMG_3077.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1687  alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2017\/03\/IMG_3077-e1488998507519-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"348\" height=\"196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2017\/03\/IMG_3077-e1488998507519-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2017\/03\/IMG_3077-e1488998507519-280x158.png 280w, https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2017\/03\/IMG_3077-e1488998507519.png 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 348px) 100vw, 348px\" \/><\/a>Some students stay up late and have a good GPA like Fatma Jouni, an 8th grade student at Woodworth Middle School. \u00a0\u201cOn school nights I sometimes sleep around 3:30 A.M. and on the weekends I sleep at 5 or 6 A.M.,\u201d she said. \u201cMy GPA is a 4.0 so I don\u2019t think that staying up can affect my education. I don\u2019t let my sleep get in the way of my education because education comes first.\u201d Fatma has never slept in class and she never overslept. \u201cI\u2019ve never been late to school. I go to school at 7:30 A.M. and class starts at 8 A.M.&#8221; she said. \u201cI don\u2019t get tired at school because I\u2019m a very energized person so when I wake up I can\u2019t go back to sleep. I\u2019m wide awake.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In conclusion, sleeping early is important for you. Statistics say staying up late can affect your education. Also, teens need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night to function best. Sleep is important because it can help you eat better and manage the stress of being a teen. Husain sleeps late and struggles in school, Hanna sleeps early and does good, and Fatma sleeps late and does good in school. So what do you think?
