Not only that but it provides an environment where students can develop a variety of skills, but there are many ways gym can be annoying. Like always being tardy to class,or even having to do the mile run.

There are many gym teachers who enjoy teaching Physical Education. One of those teachers is Nancy Wilkie, a gym teacher and a counselor at Unis middle school. Ms.Wilkie says, “I think many students complain about gym because they are not used to activity”. Also that some students have, “a lack of confidence”. There are many signs to students who lack confidence. Like when they say the words “impossible” or “might.” “My advice to students who struggle in gym it to just keep trying, be open to new activities, and remember how fun it is to play.” says Mrs. Wilkie.

Fatmeh Beydoun an 8th grade student who goes to middle school says, “I don’t like gym because teachers make it all about themselves and they make it really boring for kids.” some teachers do make gym boring. For example when teachers don’t let you talk. I mean its gym, not math or science?. “There is no point for gym in school since we don’t even play that much, it’s just a waste of time”, says Fatmeh. Some violent sports terrify a lot of kids which sometimes causes the hate for gym.

Some students actually enjoy have gym, and get mad when they don’t have gym on their schedule. Houda Assli, a student that currently attends Fordson high school is one of these people. “Gym helps us students gain energy”, says Houda. Exercise is a great way to improve energy levels and gym always helps with that. “Gym allows you to be active in school hours”, says Houda. According to www.noodle.com only 29 percent of high school students are getting recommended 60 minutes a day of physical activity.

In the end we all have to take gym at least once a year. Gym can be fun and good but boring and hard at the same time. There are many students that tend to lack physical education. Those are some of the students who sometimes struggle a lot during gym. According to www.nbcnews.com 38 percent of students spend more than 3 hours watching television. So many students actually need to be active in school which is why gym can sometimes help with that.

Unis Middle School journalist, Mariam Shenaq

Do you think gym class should be required in school?
