As of now the federal minimum wage is set at $7.25 per hour. Some people have to live off of making such a low amount of money. In states like California, they have set a \u201cFair Wage Act Initiative\u201d which is trying to make the minimum wage in California $15 by 2021. As of now California\u2019s minimum wage is set at $10 per hour but that is still not a lot of earnings. In Michigan the minimum wage is $8.50 an hour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As minimum wage increases more people can provide more for themselves and their families. Finding themselves a new place to live, buying a car, or even being able to put food on the table are all great things that come with raising the minimum wage. Many people say that raising the minimum wage will only benefit teens, but this is not true. 89% of those who would benefit from a federal minimum wage raise would be 20 years old or older.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who have jobs that don\u2019t pay minimum wage most likely had one when they were younger. Working as a waiter, waitress, or a cashier are some jobs that pay minimum wage. If I had continued to make minimum wage I\u2019d have at least $1,000 difference in savings.\u201d When Mr.Farhat was younger he was paid minimum wage,\u201cIf I was still being paid so low I wouldn\u2019t be able to support my family.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Barack Obama has made it clear that he wants to increase <a href=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2016\/12\/man-person-suit-united-states-of-america.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1346 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2016\/12\/man-person-suit-united-states-of-america-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"179\" height=\"119\" srcset=\"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2016\/12\/man-person-suit-united-states-of-america-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2016\/12\/man-person-suit-united-states-of-america-280x186.jpg 280w, https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/journalism\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/929\/2016\/12\/man-person-suit-united-states-of-america.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 179px) 100vw, 179px\" \/><\/a>the minimum wage. President Obama signed an Executive Order to raise the hourly minimum wage to $10.10 for workers on new Federal contracts. \u201cRaising the minimum wage will increase earnings for millions of families, boost the bottom line for businesses across our country, and reaffirm the principle that in America, nobody working full time should live in poverty.\u201d said President Obama.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minimum wage is a controversial topic, but when it comes down to it, being able to support yourself, and in some cases a family. It comes with questions like what is going to be in jeopardy? The urgency of raising minimum wage is extremely crucial for the American population. To have the thought of poverty on the mind of a striving individual is something we should try to avoid at all costs.
