{"id":262,"date":"2018-01-01T13:51:24","date_gmt":"2018-01-01T18:51:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/johnstk\/?p=262"},"modified":"2018-01-01T13:52:58","modified_gmt":"2018-01-01T18:52:58","slug":"self-care-a-new-years-resolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/johnstk\/2018\/01\/01\/self-care-a-new-years-resolution\/","title":{"rendered":"Self Care:  A New Years Resolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents, this one is for you\u2026..<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we begin a new year, the topic of New Year\u2019s Resolutions always come up. \u00a0If you are anything like me, you always make one, even though you know you\u2019re going to forget about it, get busy or disinterested\u2026.And what do you know\u2026..February comes around and you have forgotten what your resolution even was! \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resolutions are hard to maintain, especially if you are trying to make a big change\u2026..but they always reel us in with the promised freshness of a new year. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I say all of this to say, I\u2019m sorry. \u00a0I have a New Year\u2019s Resolution for you (and for me).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s called <\/span><b>self care<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0You most likely have heard of it, it\u2019s everywhere nowadays. \u00a0Doctors and Mental Health Professionals have recognized the need for moments to destress to cope with a stressful life. \u00a0However, self care is first and foremost <\/span><b>taking good care of yourself<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0Sounds simple, but if we all stop to think about it&#8211; do we really care for ourselves as well as we take care of other people?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As parents, or as adults in general, we are encouraged to be selfless and feel guilty when we are not. \u00a0Too often we get busy thinking of other people\u2026..thinking about what our kids need, what our boss wants, what that person at the checkout counter thought of us, what other family members need\u2026.the list is endless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a <\/span><b>mental load<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that we carry with us all of the time. \u00a0When it is not addressed it is compounded into <\/span><b>toxic stress.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0Toxic stress is just that, it is toxic. \u00a0It is detrimental to your physical health, mental health, emotional health, relationships\u2026.the list is endless. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>When we take time to intentionally care for ourselves we take our mental load off for a minute, unpack the unnecessary things from it and recharge. \u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contrary to popular belief, self care is not simply getting your nails done, buying something you really want, or sleeping in. \u00a0These are all really nice things, but they can be short lived and financially stressful. <\/span><b>\u00a0To truly practice self care, we have to take steps to minimize our stress, recharge our purpose, and check in with our emotional state<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is hard to do in a busy life. \u00a0Tricky emotions, stressors and concerns are put on the back burner, but they never go away- do they?
