Please review the behavior matrix in the student handbook and note the posted behavior expectations for the classroom.

The building tardy policy will be in effect. You will receive a Wednesday detention after you have received 6 tardies (cumulative in ALL your classrooms, not just mine). Be on time! Also, when you accumulate tardies only in my class, it will be considered a behavior issue and P.B.I.S will apply.

The classroom is a RED ZONE. Please do not use your cell phone unless Mr. Hewitt has specifically asked you to use it for something. This includes, but is not limited to, the emergency text to/from your parents (they need to call the school, you need to use the classroom phone), the calculator on your phone (you will be assigned a calculator in the classroom), or the music you have stored on it (I want you talking about the math with your group, not listening to music). Turn OFF your phone when you enter the classroom. If you have it out while a quiz or a test is occurring (even AFTER you have turned yours in) I will assume you are using it to cheat or to help someone to cheat and penalties will apply.

The district attendance policy will apply. If you accumulate 10 undocumented absences, you will be on audit. To receive full credit, you will need a 78% or better on the cumulative final exam. Otherwise, you will receive partial credit. Documented absences include doctor’s visits, funerals, illness (you must get a doctor’s note), court appearances, etc. NOTE, your parent calling in your absence is NOT documented, it is just excused. These count towards audit. Also, your tardies count toward audit. Please bring all documentation WITHIN 10 days of the absence, to the attendance office.

Grading

Each assignment and assessment will be graded and students will receive feedback in a timely manner. If you are absent for a test or quiz, you will be expected to make it up within 10 school days of the original absence.

For each objective on the assignment the student will receive one of the following scores:

4

Advanced:

You clearly understand the material given and could teach or assist someone else. Very minor mistakes made, none are conceptual, only arithmetic.

3

Proficient:

You understand the material but are making some minor conceptual mistakes.

2

Partially Proficient:

You have the basic grasp of the concept being studied, but there are some major conceptual misunderstandings.

1

Not Proficient:

You have little understanding of the concept being taught and need to seek additional help.

Your goal is to receive a 3 or a 4 on all of your objectives.

How you will be graded

Per district policy, grading is divided into two categories: summative and formative.

Summative (80%)

The summative category shows that you have mastered a topic. It includes projects, tests, and quizzes. If you are absent for a test or quiz, you will be expected to make it up with 1 week of the original date. Please check and be aware of what you miss when you are absent! This is an honors class, please be aware that there will not be retakes on any tests or quizzes.

Formative (20%)

This includes homework, classwork, computer lab work, and explorations. I do GRADE formative work, I do not just look to see that you have done it. So, formative work MAY BE REDONE. To redo, turn in the problems which need to be redone (not all of them) ON A SEPARATE SHEET with the original attached within 1 week of when you get it back. Formative work IS IMPORTANT! It tells you (and Mr. Hewitt) what you still need to work on, and what you already know. Do your work, and do it again if you don’t get it right! If you receive an 80% or better on your formative grade, I will drop your lowest quiz score.

Extra Help

If you are struggling or have a question on a problem, please email Mr. Hewitt. I will either email you back, or go over your question in class. I am available after school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays unless otherwise detained because of a required meeting for professional development. I am here at school by 6:30 am, so students may ask for help at that time as well. Utilize your class time well and get your questions answered!

Contact Information

Email: hewittk@dearbornschools.org (try this first as I check my
