Scope and Sequence Curriculum<\/b><\/p>\n

Understanding Post-secondary Education for your SCI Adult<\/b><\/p>\n

Education for each student in our community is unique to meet their educational, emotional and physical needs and yet the structure and curriculum being taught aligns closely with that of their adult peers.\u00a0 How our students move through the learning process looks different and I hope that this framework will provide perspective on the fundamental levels of learning of our adult students.<\/span><\/p>\n

Levels of Learning<\/b> Description of Level<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Encounter<\/span><\/td>\nStudents are present during an experience or activity without any obvious learning outcome.\u00a0 For some students, their willingness to tolerate a shared activity may, in itself, be significant.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Awareness<\/span><\/td>\nStudent appears to show awareness, noticing that something has happened and fleetingly focusing or attending to and object, event or person<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Attention and response<\/span><\/td>\nStudents attend and begin to respond, often not consistently, to what is happening.\u00a0 Students demonstrate the beginning of an ability to distinguish between different people, objects, events and places.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Engagement<\/span><\/td>\nStudents show more consistent attention and can tell the difference between specific events in their surroundings.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Participation<\/span><\/td>\nStudents engage in sharing, taking turns and the anticipation of familiar sequences of events.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Involvement<\/span><\/td>\nStudents actively strives to reach out, join in or comment in some way on the activity itself or on the actions and responses of the the other students<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Gaining skills and understanding<\/span><\/td>\nStudents gain, strengthen and make general use of their skills, and understanding, knowledge, concepts or understanding that relates to their experience of the curriculum.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

                  • Identifies items of interest to save for<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • Makes a plan for saving money for a desired purchase<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • Creates shopping lists\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                    • Students will be able to plan for and cook nutritious meals<\/span>\n

                      • Identifies a well-balanced meal<\/span><\/li>\n

                            Employment<\/b><\/p>\n

                            • Students will identify employment preferences that meet their individual skill level<\/span>\n

                              • Identifies job preferences<\/span><\/li>\n
                              • Recognizes types of work he\/she is good at<\/span><\/li>\n
                              • Identifies where improvement is needed\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                • Students will engage in authentic work experiences leading to paid employment<\/span>\n

                                        Students will partner with community agencies to assist in reaching goals for adult living<\/span><\/p>\n

                                        • Attends informational meetings to learn about agencies and services available<\/span><\/li>\n
                                        • Obtains legal Identification<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                          Students will interact in the community with a maximum level of independence<\/span><\/p>\n

                                          • Identifies the purpose or goal of the community based activity i.e. to purchase groceries, get money from the bank, buy a birthday gift, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n
                                          • Gathers necessary resources for the activity<\/span><\/li>\n
                                          • Perseveres\u00a0 with the activity<\/span><\/li>\n
                                          • Reflects on the activity and process for improving independence in the future<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                            Leisure Recreation<\/b><\/p>\n

                                            • Students will identify, plan for, and engage in leisure and recreation activities of interest at home or school with a maximum level of independence<\/span>\n
                                                \n
                                              • Identifies activity of interest at home or school<\/span><\/li>\n
                                              • Recognizes necessary resources for engagement in the activity<\/span><\/li>\n
                                              • Obtains necessary resources for activity completion<\/span><\/li>\n
                                              • Engages in the desired activity with minimal prompting and support<\/span><\/li>\n
