SAT Words Of The Day

Posted by Roxanne Crabill on September 29, 2017 in Class News |

Attached is the list of words we will be learning this year.  Every two weeks, we will have a quiz in which I give you the definitions and sentences using those words.  You will match the definition to the sentence in which the word makes sense.

The First Quiz will be on Wednesday, October 4th on the 10 words from week 1 and week 2. (Week of September 18, Week of September 25)

The Second Quiz will be on Wednesday, October 18th on the 10 words from week 3 and week 4.  (Week of October 2nd, Week of October 9)

The Third Quiz will be on Wednesday, November 1st, on the 10 words from week 5 and week 6. (Week of October 16, Week of October 23)

plus the word quixotic – (kwik-sa-tic)  not sensible about practical matters

The idea of an obese person completing a decathlon is quixotic.

The Fourth Quiz will be on Wednesday, November 15th, on the 10 words from week 7 and week 8. (Week of October 30, Week of November 6)

The Fifth Quiz will be on Friday, December 8th on the 10 words from week 9 and week 11 (Week 10 was Thanksgiving, so we didn’t do 10 words).

(Week of November 13, Week of November 27)

The Sixth Quiz will be on Friday, December 22 on the 10 words from Week 12 and 13 (Week of December 4 and Week of December 11th.

Physics Composition Book

Posted by Roxanne Crabill on September 17, 2017 in Class News |

The format for doing the physics composition book is as follows:

  1. Open the front cover and number the first page on the right “1”, then number each page on the right 3,5,7,9, 11, etc. until all pages are numbered.  The left side is the even numbers.
  2. Page 1 and Page 2 are for the Table of Contents.
  3. Page 3:  Copy the Class Norms from the ilearn.
  4. Page 4:  Copy the The International System of Measurements (under resources) in ilearn.
  5. Page 4:  Copy the Metric Prefixes found on page 2 of the SIPI in ilearn.
  6. Page 5:  Copy the Grading Rubric for Thinking Maps.
  7. Page 6:  Copy Laboratory Safety Rules from ilearn.  Continue on the next pages until you get all of the safety rules copied.

8.  On next page after Safety Rules Copy page 1 SIPI from ilearn.

9.  Copy Graph diagrams from Lesson Plan 10/3 from iblog.

10. Make sure pages 1-16 from the SIPI located in ilearn is copied into your journal – composition book. (do not do page 3)

I will be checking your composition books on TUESDAY, JANUARY 8TH.

Study Guide for Tuesday’s Quiz

Posted by Roxanne Crabill on December 17, 2017 in Class News |

Finding the momentum of an object:

Formula for finding momentum is    p = m x v  ;  units are kg·m/s

Example: What is the momentum of a 1200 kg car that is moving at 10 m/s.

G:  m = 1200 kg

v = 10 m/s

U:   p = ?

F:   p = m x v

S:   p = 1200 kg x 10 m/s

S:   p = 1200 kg·m/s   (don’t forget to circle your answer)

Formula for finding a change in momentum (IMPULSE) is F x t = m (vf – vi)

Example:  What is the change in momentum of an 5 kg object accelerating from 12m/s to 15 m/s?

G:  m = 5 kg

vf = 15 m/s

vi = 12 m/s

U:  Δp =?

F:  Δp = m (vf -vi)

S:  Δp = 5 kg ( 15 m/s – 12 m/s )

S: Δp = 5 kg x 3 m/s

Δp = 15 kg·m/s   (don’t forget to circle your answer)

Example for impulse:  What is the impulse of a car that has a net force of 150 N acting on the car for 10 s?

Impulse = F x t

G:  F = 150 N

t = 10 s

U:  Impulse = ?

F:  Impulse = F x t

S:  Impulse = 150 N x 10 s

S:  Impulse = 1500 N·s  or  1500 kg·m/s   (don’t forget to circle your answer)

Review your charts for solving elastic collisions. I will go over one in class.  I cannot reproduce one on the iblog.

Hints for worksheets:

  1. Put all information in question into the appropriate boxes.
  2. p = m x v
  3. Momentum total = the sum of the two momentums.
  4. The total initial momentum = the total final momentum
  5. The total final momentum = the sum of the two momentums
  6. The unkown velocity = momentum/mass

Conservation of Momentum – elastic and inelastic collisions

Momentum math problems (1)

Problems 1 -5 and Problems 11 – 15 are due on Monday, December 18th.

These problems are just like the ones we did in class on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Problems 6 – 10 are for 10 pts EC.  They are done exactly the opposite of problems 11-15 and the inelastic problems on the first worksheet.
