{"id":212,"date":"2018-12-13T08:25:56","date_gmt":"2018-12-13T13:25:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/eldzein\/?p=212"},"modified":"2018-12-13T08:25:56","modified_gmt":"2018-12-13T13:25:56","slug":"congratulations-maples-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/eldzein\/2018\/12\/13\/congratulations-maples-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Congratulations Maples School!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"page-header\">\n<h2>Maples named national Distinguished School<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Maples Elementary Schools has received a national award recognizing the success of its students despite difficult circumstances.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dearbornschools.org\/images\/articles\/pressreleases\/PR_20_Maples_small_group.jpg\" alt=\"PR 20 Maples small group\" width=\"350\" height=\"180\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The National Association of ESEA State Program Administrators named Maples a 2018 Distinguished School.\u00a0 Only 100 schools, two from each state, receive the award each year for exceptional student achievement. \u00a0\u00a0All the schools recognized qualify for funding under the federal Title 1 program, which supports low-income and other at-risk students.\u00a0 ESEA, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, created Title 1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaples\u2019 mission is to provide an exceptional learning environment that empowers every student to succeed in life, today and in the future.\u00a0 But first the Maples staff always assures the family is supported in any way needed, and we build a partnership with the family so we can then academically support the learning of their children,\u201d said Principal Donna Jakubik.\u00a0 Support for the family includes such things as finding community resources for new immigrants to recently assisting after a family suffered a fire in their home, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Maples qualified in two of three categories eligible for the award.\u00a0 The school ranked the best in Michigan for closing the achievement gap between the lowest and highest performing students, and it showed excellence in serving special student populations, Jakubik said.\u00a0 The other category is exceptional performance for two consecutive years.<\/p>\n<p>The Distinguished School award is based on the last two years of data.\u00a0 About 79 percent of Maples students are still learning English, and 98 percent are from low-income families.\u00a0 Even with those demographics, the number of Maples students scoring proficient on Michigan standardized tests was above the state passing rate and far above \u2013 more than double &#8211;
