Here We Go! Welcome Back!

Welcome Back – I hope that your break was enjoyable and that you had some fun in the beautiful weather. I know that it is sometimes hard to have another day at home, but we’ve got this and I believe in you! Moving forward, things will look a little different, but I truly think it will be fun. Please read on to see where to begin and then, GO!!

On Monday morning, April 13th, you MUST choose a novel. I sent out three possibilities just before break, so if you need to check them out, then do it. When you are ready, you will select your novel by joining a NEW GOOGLE CLASSROOM group. This is the best way to keep everybody up to date on the novel you chose to read and hopefully no one will get confused. Until we are finished with the novels, the only thing you will submit on the old GC will be the April 16th Independent Reading Project (remember you only need to do the 25%). Otherwise, ALL of your work will be on your NEW group GC for your novel.

PLEASE NOTE: All three novels are doing the same literary topic, journal, and quiz each week, just within a different novel.

Ok, so join the GC of your chosen novel only on Monday the 13th. Then complete the following for the week:

Monday –

  • Watch the video on the topic of setting for this week – Setting
  • Listen/read chapter one in “Dead End” and “Mind” and “Warm-Up” in Crossover

Tuesday –

  • Listen/read chapters 2-3 in “Dead End” and “Mind”
  • Listen/read pages 20-40 in the “First Quarter” of Crossover

Wednesday –

  • Listen/read chapter 4 in “Dead End”
  • Listen/read chapter 4-5 in “Mind”
  • Listen/read pages 41-61in the “First Quarter” of Crossover

Thursday – Sunday –

  • Catch up on reading if you missed it
  • Complete the setting lesson
  • Write the journal posted in GC
  • Complete the short Multiple Choice quiz on reading

It sounds and reads a little crazy for the moment, but in the big picture, you will see that you get to pace yourself from Monday to Sunday each week.

Then, we will be meeting each Thursday on Google Hangouts. Zoom is having some privacy issues, so we will attempt Google Hangouts/Meet, so please download the app and have your parent send permission before Thursday, April 16th. We will meet each week as follows:

  • Dead End at 11:00am
  • Out of My Mind at 12:15pm
  • Crossover at 1:30pm

You really should be on the hangout so that you can ask questions about any work, or the reading. The invite will be posted each Thursday morning on your GC by 10:00am for the week.

This week will be like starting over, but I am confident we will be able to do it. The novels are not available on the free audible collections, unless you have a membership, so I will be reading them out loud, recording, and posting them. Aren’t you lucky?

So here we go; get your Independent Reading Project turned in by Thursday the 16th (on our original GC), and get ready to have a blast with a new novel. I am so excited to read these books with you and to see your smiles on hangout this coming Thursday.

Take Care and Hugs,

Chelly Eifert

One Last Post Before Break – Our Novel(s) for 4th Card Marking…

HI!!

I have found three great books and couldn’t decide, so you can pick one to read along with me after break. Please respond to a post on Google Classroom on Monday, April 13th, to which book group you would like to be a part of in our 4th card marking. I am attaching the links to each book here so you can check it out or order to read along, otherwise I will be reading them and sending weekly videos of me reading the chapters. 🙂

Have a wonderful break! I will miss all of you and will be having happy thoughts about our next adventure together into literature!!

Hugs,

Ms. Eifert

Find a Book!

HI!
So many of you have reached out looking for new books to read for our next Independent Reading Project – YAY! Here are some websites you can try for getting some books online:

manybooks.net

openlibrary.org

goodreads.com/shelf/show/free-online

audible.com

kindle.com

For some of these you will have to set up a username and password, but they are free. Some of them you can rent or buy as well. Good Luck and look for a new post later today regarding our novels for after the break!
Big Hugs,
Ms. Eifert and Ms. Greenbaum

Happy April 1st and Notes

Greetings,

Thank you so much for your patience with the Zoom Today. We missed a lot of people so please send permission and then joion in two weeks on April 15th at noon. I can’t wait to hear about your Spring Break! Here are a few items that I want to put out there:

  • I am setting up a Remind. This will help with communication and maybe ease up on emails for parents. I will try to limit emails to one or two mass per week and only reach out if there is a concern individually. The Remind will be for quick tidbits of info – Students MUST ask permission to sign on Remind if under 13, parents, you have my permission to join – LOL! (Link is in GC or email for privacy)
  • After break we will be reading a novel. The friends who joined Zoom today had mixed reviews on doing “OnE book Fits All” versus “FouR for Reading Groups.” If you and a few friends are interested in a book and send it to me with why you want to read it, perhaps we can work it out. BUT, any book we read has to have an online audio version for those of us without the actual hard copy. If would like to check out the book Legend by Marie Lu and give me feedback, that would be great – this is one of the books I was thinking of doing. Share thoughts by no later than tomorrow so I can send out information by Saturday for those who may want to order hard copies.
  • Finally, please ask yourself this question: If the state says no more going to school (only online), how would my effort during remote learning be graded? Be honest with yourself. We as teachers don’t know anything more than the public right now, but my goal is that you all can honestly say that you tried your best to be successful and prepare for 8th grade. Are you?

Well, that is about all I have for now, please take care of yourself and send me some photos of spirit day stuff. I miss you all!

Fondly,

Chelly Eifert

Happiness Continued

Greetings,

We are now entering week three of remote learning and staying safe at home. I hope that everyone is healthy. This week we will continue with our Common Lit theme of “Happiness.” The following is the schedule with a due date of Saturday, April 5th:

  • Monday – Happiness Graphic Organizer & new reading selection, “Truth”
  • Tuesday – Continue to do the G.O. & read new selection, “I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud”
  • Wednesday – Continue to do the G.O. & read final selection, “From Blossoms”
    • ZOOM at noon – Ask permission to join in and share some good news!
  • Thursday – Your Happiness Final Assessment will post. This is a creative writing piece that will be based on all of your new knowledge of Happiness.
  • Friday – Just catch up and get it all turned in on time! 🙂

Again, this is all due by Saturday, April 5th and then we are on Spring Break, so there will not be anything assigned again until April 13, 2020 – WAHOO!

Parents, thank you so much for all that you are doing to keep our amazing students on track – you are so appreciated!

With Hugs,

Great to “See” You and Thank you

Hi There and Happy Thursday!!

The not so great news – ALL MISSING WORK (on student connect) is DUE by TOMORROW, FRIDAY, MARCH 27, 2020.

The Great News – It was really great to see so many of you yesterday on ZOOM! It made my heart happy to see your faces and to hear you all sing to Emina for her birthday! As a group, we decided to change up our third Independent Reading Project requirements for the April 16th due date. The new plan is to complete the 25% portion, of the genre you choose, ONLY. I will put up an assignment for you today for Reading Project #3 and then you can submit it when you finish a book, BUT it is not due until April 16, 2020, so take your time and enjoy a few books.

Please make a note: One of my emails this past week regarding missing work mentioned Independent Reading Project #2 for those people that never turned it in on January 23rd, but seriously need the grade boost before tomorrow, it did NOT mean that everyone had one due, so breathe.

Finally, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for nominating me as teacher of the year. I am completely delighted to by your teacher and truly love working with each of you!

With Big Hugs,
Ms. Eifert

New ZOOM Meeting Time

Good Morning,

I hope this email finds you well on this beautiful sunny day. Our ZOOM meeting time has been pushed to 1:00pm today (my daughter has to move out of her dorm room between 10-12). You will need the app on your phone, but it should just open on a Chromebook, laptop, or desktop. If on an app, you will click join the meeting and then enter the meeting code which is 662 931 419. On a Chromebook or computer, you can go to zoom.com and do the same thing or simply click the link in the GC. The app is a light blue box with a white movie camera.

Thank you for your patience in the delay of the meeting and I look forward to seeing you all soon!

Fondly,

Chelly Eifert

You Got This!

Good Morning Everybody!
Your new Common Lit article is posted, as well as a “Question” for tomorrow. For the “Question” follow the directions and write a paragraph in response and post it. Your classmates will be able to read and give feedback, so do your best. Then there is a new article for you to read on Thursday. Once you have read Thursday’s article, I will open another “Question” for Friday comparing all three articles from this week and you will once again write a paragraph and post, as well as comment on another student’s writing.

This is new and challenging, but we are writing and giving/receiving feedback in real-time. This is replacing writing another essay – YAY!!

PLEASE stay on top of these readings and postings – they are all due by Monday, March 30th. New articles will be posted on Monday as well for week two of “Happiness.”

Have fun – I know you can do this!!

  • New assignments posted today with DAILY readings, so keep up
  • We are going to try and ZOOM on Wednesday – check Google Classroom tomorrow for more information
  • As of right now the end of the marking period is still this Friday, March 27th (also my birthday in case you were wondering)
  • Gradebook is updated through March 6, 2020 – Please log into student connect and check to see if you have MISSING work – you can get it done and submitted by Friday for credit either by putting it in GC or taking pics and sending to me – (HINT: that independent reading project you didn’t do in January can really improve your grade) – ALL MISSING WORK IS DUE BY THIS FRIDAY THE 27TH – NO EXCEPTIONS.
  • NO work that we have done since our last meeting on March 12, 2020 will be on the report card
  • I miss you all and hope to see you soon
