Students are doing a great job learning our new school routines. \u00a0They are working hard each day. \u00a0Each week, I will send home a newsletter to let you know what we are learning. The newsletter is also posted in my blog on the Haigh website.<\/p>\n
Every Monday, students will get a new spelling list of words to study for the week. \u00a0I also include spelling homework. \u00a0On Friday, students will have a spelling test. \u00a0The tests are sent home for you to sign and return to school. \u00a0Students will be tested on the list of words and also be tested on their ability to spell words that fit the spelling pattern, but are not listed. \u00a0For example, if students have the -an word family on the list, the student may be asked to spell the word pan, even though it is not on the list. They are tested on their ability to apply the letter sound to the pattern and spell the word. \u00a0If you help your child practice spelling words that rhyme with the pattern, that will be very helpful. \u00a0I will also do this.<\/p>\n
Students will also have reading homework each day. \u00a0Please make sure your child is reading 15 minutes or more daily. \u00a0I will send home a book bag of books to read at their level. \u00a0The book bags will be sent home each day and returned to school.<\/p>\n
Math lessons include counting using a number grid and number line; number writing practice; and counting using tally marks.<\/p>\n
Social Studies lessons will include learning about the past, present and future. Students study history as they are learning how people lived in the past compared to the present.<\/p>\n
Science lessons involve learning about properties of matter. \u00a0Students will be able to identify a solid, liquid and gas.<\/p>\n
Reminders: \u00a01st Grade Parent Meeting, Wednesday, September 16, 3:50 – 4:30 p.m<\/p>\n
Gym – Mondays, wear gym shoes; Visit library on Fridays.<\/p>\n
