I will begin making calls home to students\/parents this week.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Overview:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>This week we will begin our unit on <strong>\u201cIdentity\u201d<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;Essential Questions:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>How do people reveal their identity (who they really are)?<\/li><li>How do circumstances impact a person\u2019s decisions\/actions?<\/li><li>How do socioeconomic (money, class, ethnicity) differences create barriers between people?<\/li><li>In a culture where we are bombarded with other people trying to define us, how do we make decisions for ourselves?<\/li><li>Who am I now? Who do I want to become?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>REQUIRED WORK-<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Article of the Week:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>This week\u2019s article, a memoir,&nbsp; <strong>\u201cI Escaped a Violent Gang\u201d<\/strong> is posted on Google Classroom with directions to read and annotate. In addition, you will need to complete the <strong>4 Square Graphic Organizer.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SSR:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Read<\/strong> daily. I suggest 30 minutes a day. You can make daily annotations on a sticky note or notebook paper. See the bookmark posted on Google Classroom.<\/li><li>At the end of the week (up until Sunday) write a<strong> SSR+ Weekly Reflection<\/strong> on Google-Classroom.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Note : If you do not have your novel at home, or you are expecting to finish it soon, you may use any online platform available to you for access to books. You can find a list of sources on earlier blog posts and Google Classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>IXL&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following have been assigned to you (8th grade level):<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vocabulary: Q6<\/strong>&nbsp; \u201c<em>Words with- ful\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vocabulary: Q7 <\/strong>\u201c<em>Words with -less\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vocabulary:S1 &amp; 2<\/strong> \u201c<em>Synonyms\/Antonym<\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The goal is 80% or higher for mastery.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OPTIONAL WORK-<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Movie:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cFreedom Writers\u201d (available on NetFlix or Amazon Prime)-<\/strong> Find out more about the life of \u201cAna\u201d, including her classes with Ms. Gruwell and how her students, including \u201cAna\u201d, came to write memoirs of their experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;Bored&#8230;looking for something to do besides more Netflix and&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>video games, give one of these a try:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Start (or continue) a <strong>journal<\/strong> about what life is like for you in this \u201cquarantine\u201d time period. It can help your mind, as well as perhaps serve as a primary source to others one day.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\"><li>A former Bryant student, Bailey, has put together a nightly<strong> \u201cHistory Bedtime Story\u201d<\/strong> where she shares a story of some history from Detroit on her company website. Don\u2019t let the title scare you off. The stories are quirky, little known facts about Detroit and only about 5 minutes each.&nbsp; You can watch them anytime of the day, so give it a try.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of being an engineer at GM (I believe), she runs a tour company and club called Detroit History Tours and The Detroit History Club. I thought it would be interesting for you to hear from someone, who once sat in the same classrooms as you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroithistorytours.com\/video-bedtime-stories-1\">VIDEO HISTORY BEDTIME STORIES \u2014 Detroit History Tours tour detroit<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\"><li>Try&nbsp; a podcast: Here are a few that sounded interesting to me. I\u2019ve never listened to one, but I\u2019m going to give it a try. I\u2019m thinking it\u2019s like listening to those radio shows from the old days\u2026 like \u201c The Hitchhiker\u201d was a part of a weekly radio show. If you have any suggestions, email me.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Radio Adventures of Eleanor Amplified is fiction story about a reporter going out after \u201cThe Big Story\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/podcasts\/483123262\/eleanor-amplified\">https:\/\/www.npr.org\/podcasts\/483123262\/eleanor-amplified<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Flyest Fable with Morgan Givens is a fiction story about Antoine, who is bullied, and a magical book takes him to another world. Reminds me of&nbsp; <strong>The Lion and the Witch and the Wardrobe<\/strong> and the cupboard.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.morgangivens.com\/flyest-fables\">https:\/\/www.morgangivens.com\/flyest-fables<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Allusionist explores the oddities of the English Language.
