{"id":127,"date":"2019-01-07T10:07:09","date_gmt":"2019-01-07T15:07:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/charafeddine\/?p=127"},"modified":"2019-01-07T10:07:09","modified_gmt":"2019-01-07T15:07:09","slug":"healthy-new-years-resolutions-for-children-teens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/charafeddine\/2019\/01\/07\/healthy-new-years-resolutions-for-children-teens\/","title":{"rendered":"Healthy New Year&#8217;s Resolutions for Children &#038; Teens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The start of the\u00a0new year is a great time to help your children focus on forming good\u00a0habits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The\u00a0American Academy of Pediatrics\u00a0(AAP) provides the following list of ideas for you to talk to your children about trying, depending on their age.\u00a0\u200b<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Preschoolers<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>I will try hard to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/family-life\/family-dynamics\/communication-discipline\/Pages\/Chores-and-Responsibility.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clean up\u200b<\/a>\u00a0my toys by putting them where they belong.<\/li>\n<li>I will let my parents help me\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/healthy-living\/oral-health\/Pages\/Brush-Book-Bed.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brush my teeth<\/a>\u00a0twice a day.<\/li>\n<li>I will\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/health-issues\/conditions\/prevention\/Pages\/Hand-Washing-A-Powerful-Antidote-to-Illness.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wash my hands<\/a>\u00a0after going to the bathroom and before eating.<\/li>\n<li>I will learn how to\u00a0help clear the table when I am done eating.<\/li>\n<li>I will be friendly to all animals. I will learn how to\u00a0ask the owners if I can pet their animal first.<\/li>\n<li>I will do my best to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/safety-prevention\/at-play\/Pages\/Bullying-Its-Not-Ok.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">be nice to other kids<\/a>\u00a0who need a friend or look sad or lonely.<\/li>\n<li>I will talk with my parent or a trusted adult when I need help or am scared.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Kids, 5 to 12 years old<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>I will drink\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/healthy-living\/nutrition\/Pages\/What-About-Fat-And-Cholesterol.aspx\">reduced-fat milk\u200b<\/a>\u00a0and water most\u00a0days. Soda and fruit drinks\u00a0are\u00a0only\u00a0for\u00a0special times.<\/li>\n<li>I will\u00a0take care of my skin by putting on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/safety-prevention\/at-play\/Pages\/Sun-Safety.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sunscreen<\/a>\u00a0before I go outdoors on bright, sunny days. I will try to remember to\u00a0stay in the shade whenever possible and wear a hat and sunglasses, especially when I&#8217;m playing sports.<\/li>\n<li>I will try to find a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/healthy-living\/sports\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sport<\/a>\u00a0(like basketball or soccer)\u00a0or an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/english\/healthy-living\/fitness\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">activity\u00a0<\/a>(like playing tag, jumping rope, dancing or riding my bike)\u00a0that I like and do it at least three times a week!<\/li>\n<li>I will always wear a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/safety-prevention\/at-play\/Pages\/Bicycle-Helmets-What-Every-Parent-Should-Know.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">helmet<\/a>\u00a0when riding a bike, scooter or skateboard.<\/li>\n<li>I will wear my\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/safety-prevention\/on-the-go\/Pages\/Seat-Belts-for-Older-Children-Teens-Video.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">seat belt\u00a0<\/a>every time I get in a car. I&#8217;ll sit in the back seat and use a booster seat until I am tall enough to use a lap\/shoulder seat belt.<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;ll try to\u00a0be friendly to kids who may have a hard time making friends by asking them to join activities such as sports or games.<\/li>\n<li>I will tell an adult about bullying that\u00a0I see or hear about to\u00a0do what I can to\u00a0help keep school safe for everyone.<\/li>\n<li>I will keep my personal info safe and not share my name, home address, school name or telephone number on the Internet. Also, I&#8217;ll never send a picture of myself to someone I chat with on the computer without asking my parent if it is okay.<\/li>\n<li>I will try to talk with my parent or a trusted adult when I have a problem or feel stressed.<\/li>\n<li>I promise that I&#8217;ll do my best\u00a0to follow our household rules for videogames and\u00a0internet use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Kids, 13 years old and older<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>I will try to eat two servings of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/healthy-living\/nutrition\/Pages\/How-to-Get-Your-Child-to-Eat-More-Fruits-and-Veggies.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fruit<\/a>\u00a0and two servings of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/healthy-living\/nutrition\/Pages\/How-to-Get-Your-Child-to-Eat-More-Fruits-and-Veggies.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vegetables<\/a>\u00a0every day.\u00a0I will drink sodas only at special times.<\/li>\n<li>I will do my best to\u00a0take care of my body through fun\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/ages-stages\/teen\/fitness\/Pages\/How-Teens-Can-Stay-Fit.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">physical activity<\/a>\u00a0and eating the right types and amounts of foods.<\/li>\n<li>When I have some down time for media, I\u00a0will try to\u00a0choose educational, high-quality nonn-violent TV shows\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/family-life\/Media\/Pages\/Video-Games-Set-Your-Own-Ratings-System.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video games<\/a>\u00a0that I enjoy.\u00a0I will spend only one to two hours each day \u2013 at the most \u2013 on these activities.\u00a0I promise to respect out\u00a0household rules for videogames and internet use.<\/li>\n<li>I will do what I can to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/family-life\/Community\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">help out in my community<\/a>. I will give\u00a0some of my time to help others, working with community groups or others\u00a0that help\u00a0people in need. These activities will make me feel better about myself and my community.<\/li>\n<li>When I feel angry or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/healthy-living\/emotional-wellness\/Building-Resilience\/Pages\/Recognizing-Managing-Stress-in-Children-Video.aspx\">stressed out<\/a>, I will take a break and find helpful ways to deal with the stress, such as exercising, reading, writing in a journal or talking about my problem with a parent or friend.<\/li>\n<li>When faced with a difficult decision, I will talk about my choices with an adult whom I can trust.<\/li>\n<li>When I notice my friends are struggling, being\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/safety-prevention\/at-play\/Pages\/Bullying-Its-Not-Ok.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bullied<\/a>\u00a0or making risky choices, I will look for a\u00a0\u00a0trusted adultso that we can attempt to find a way to\u00a0help.<\/li>\n<li>I will be careful about whom I choose to date. I will treat the other person with respect and not force them to do something they do not want to do. I will not use\u00a0violence. I will expect to be treated the same way in return.<\/li>\n<li>I will\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/ages-stages\/teen\/substance-abuse\/Pages\/Helping-Teens-Resist-Pressure-to-Try-Drugs.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resist peer pressure<\/a>\u00a0to try tobacco-cigarettes, drugs, or alcohol.
