Have a parent or sibling give your child a spelling test at the end of the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week we have a new spelling pattern, ER, IR and UR :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Spelling words:&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>over, were, every, under, after<\/strong>, bird, girl, dirt, burn, hurt<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rule:<\/strong>&nbsp;The spelling patterns ER, IR and UR are all r controlled vowels that represent the same sound \/r\/ like the last sound in the word ov<strong>er<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Notes:<\/strong>&nbsp;Continue to remind your child to \u201ctap it out\u201d even if they remember how to spell the word, it helps with&nbsp;<strong>permanent<\/strong>&nbsp;spelling memory. The \/r\/ sound should only get one tap; it\u2019s spelled with two letters in these words but only represents one sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>over, were, every, under and after- the \/r\/ sound in these words is represented by the ER spelling.<\/li><li>every- remind your child that a y at the end of a word usually represents either the sound of long I (like sky) or the long e sound (like key). In the word every the y represents a long e sound which can be tricky (Hey! The word tricky ends with a long e sound too!).<\/li><li>under and after- these words also have side-by-side consonants (u<strong>nd<\/strong>er, a<strong>ft<\/strong>er) which can be tricky for kids to hear.
