{"id":457,"date":"2020-05-04T08:08:31","date_gmt":"2020-05-04T12:08:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/chanceyh\/?p=457"},"modified":"2020-05-04T08:08:33","modified_gmt":"2020-05-04T12:08:33","slug":"weekly-assignments-5-4-5-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/chanceyh\/2020\/05\/04\/weekly-assignments-5-4-5-8\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekly Assignments 5\/4-5\/8"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>New articles have been posted for writing this week.<\/li><li>This week we begin studying geometry in math, Module 5.<\/li><li><strong>Please limit your child to ONE lesson a day on Zearn<\/strong>\u00a0and have them complete the video lesson and homework if they need more work. If they fall behind, contact me and we can make reasonable plan for catching up. Students who do multiple math lessons in a day without direct teaching will likely not get the time and practice they need to retain their new learning. Instead of working faster through the work it is better to work deeper and build more knowledge.<\/li><li>This week we will be switching from Science to Social Studies and begin learning about how people learn about the past.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Spelling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Practice the spelling pattern throughout the week as usual. Have a parent or sibling give your child a spelling test at the end of the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week we have a new spelling pattern, AR :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Spelling words:&nbsp;<\/strong>far, jar, car, bar, art, arm, card, yard, hard,&nbsp;<strong>are<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rule:<\/strong>&nbsp;The spelling pattern AR is called an R controlled vowel because the R that follows the A changes the sound of the a. We often call this a \u201cbossy r\u201d in first grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Notes:<\/strong>&nbsp;Children often hear the \/ar\/ sound and write just the letter R. Remind your child that \/ar\/ is spelled with two letters. Continue to remind your child to \u201ctap it out\u201d even if they remember how to spell the word, it helps with&nbsp;<strong>permanent<\/strong>&nbsp;spelling memory. The AR sound should only get one tap; it\u2019s two letters but only represents one sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>are- The E at the end of the word are let\u2019s us know that it\u2019s the word are, but it doesn\u2019t represent a sound. The E is silent.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reading<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Every child should be reading at least 40 minutes per day.&nbsp;<\/strong>This can be a combination of reading on Raz Kids to complete the required quizzes, reading on Epic, or any additional reading your child may do.<br><br><strong>Raz Kids<\/strong><br><strong>Levels A-J&nbsp;<\/strong>should read and complete at least 2 quizzes on Raz Kids every day (10 per week).<br><strong>Levels J-Z<\/strong>&nbsp;should read and complete at least one quiz on Raz Kids every day (5 per week).<br><br>If you are not sure of your child\u2019s level please let me know.<br><br>I will be able to see your child\u2019s quiz scores each time they take a quiz, so they should read carefully and look back in the book to check their answers! If they are having trouble I will email you to check in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Math<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This week there are four assigned lessons.<br><strong>Lessons 1, 2, 3 and 4 will be due on Friday.&nbsp;<\/strong>If your child finishes all of these lessons before Friday, please have them work on the homework assignments below and on IXL math instead of moving on.<br><br><strong>The homework assignments below are optional.<\/strong>&nbsp;They are all in your child\u2019s math homework book. You may read the text aloud to them and google or discuss any tricky words- it\u2019s a great idea to have them use the new words they learn in their writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Student writing should be at least three sentences long with a goal of five sentences, and it should focus on the information in the article of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This week we are learning about how life in the past was different.&nbsp;<\/strong>After you read each article, ask yourself, \u201cHow is life now different from life in the past? It has an introduction sentence where the author notifies the reader what the piece will be about. There are 3 facts in the body of the piece. In the present I like to ______. In the future I want to ______.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lesson 2- How Calendars Measure Time:&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/jr.brainpop.com\/math\/time\/calendaranddates\/\" target=\"_blank\">Watch this Video- Calendar and Dates<\/a>&nbsp;Have your child look at a calendar you have at home. Ask them questions about days, weeks, and months. Try having them use vocabulary like past, present and future when talking about dates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lesson 3- Learning About the Past: We learn about the past from people, artifacts, photographs and written records. Talk about your families past and write about it. \u201cIn the past, my family ________________.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lesson 4- Families Have a Past: Explain to the students that a photograph is a piece of evidence of a family history.&nbsp; Family histories include our own family, our parents\u2019 family when they were kids, our grandparents family when they were kids and so on.
