Wait for it!<\/div>\n<div class=\"mod\" data-md=\"61\">\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"29\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"29\"><span class=\"_Tgc\"><b>Many students with disabilities are now included in general education classes for a majority of their school day.\u00a0 Roa and Gagie (2006)<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"29\">There are many ways to support the variety of strengths and needs\u00a0our students\u00a0demonstrate. \u00a0One of the most powerful strategies is <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">VISUAL SUPPORTS<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"29\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"29\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"29\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"mod\" data-md=\"61\">\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"29\"><span class=\"_Tgc\"><b>Visual supports<\/b> are an effective strategy that includes:<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"29\"><span class=\"_Tgc\"> concrete items<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"29\"><span class=\"_Tgc\"> pictures<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"29\">Color coding words and pictures<\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"29\">using shape to imply meaning<\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"29\"><span class=\"_Tgc\"> symbols<\/span><span class=\"_Tgc\"> or printed words <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"29\"><span class=\"_Tgc\">and\/or a combination of these.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"29\">Research shows that visual cues help us to better\u00a0store and recall information. Our brain processes images more effectively than words. Try this-write down 5 words on 5 flash cards. Then write down 5 words with pictures on 5 flash cards. \u00a0Ask some friends to look briefly at each of the first set of flash cards and then 2 minutes later tell you what was on them. The number they remember correctly is their recall score. Repeat this exercise with the flashcards that have words and pictures. Which 5 flash cards was their recall score higher? \u00a0The\u00a0findings on visual learning make complete sense when you consider that the part of our\u00a0<a class=\"inline-links topic-link\" title=\"Psychology Today looks at brain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/basics\/neuroscience\">brain<\/a>\u00a0dedicated to visual processing vs. word processing is much larger! More of our sensory cortex is devoted to vision.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mod\" data-md=\"61\">\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"29\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"29\"><span class=\"_Tgc\">These visual\u00a0<b>supports<\/b> may assist children in their ability to maintain attention, understand spoken language, and sequence and organize their environment (Hodgdon, 1995).<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"g\">\n<div class=\"rc\" data-hveid=\"31\" data-ved=\"0ahUKEwjZhvvO1sfSAhVIxYMKHWEyC1QQFQgfKAAwAQ\">\n<h3 class=\"r\">YOU already use visual supports for yourself.<\/h3>\n<p>Community signs<\/p>\n<p>Lists<\/p>\n<p>Schedules<\/p>\n<p>Calendars<\/p>\n<p>Choices on a menu<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"r\"><strong>Roa and Gagie\u2019s (2006) reasons to why you should use visual supports:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They are part of everyone\u2019s communication system.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They can attract and hold a student\u2019s attention.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They enable the student to focus on the message and reduce anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They make abstract concepts more concrete for the student.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They help the student express his or her thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They help all students.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Take a look at this post.
