Exciting News!

I have officially heard word that we will have a student teacher starting on Monday, January 9th! Ms. Emily has worked in early elementary classrooms for a year now and we will be her last student teaching experience before she graduates in May!

Ms. Emily attends Wayne State University and is pursuing her degree in elementary education. She will be in our classroom Monday- Friday full time and working with me to learn how to teach district curriculum, lead small groups, and all the other things we do as teachers! πŸ™‚ In her spare time she likes to travel, spend time with family and friends, and going to the movies.

I am super excited to be helping some one grow the same passion that I have for my job. Teaching may be difficult but the rewards and relationships you make are truly life changing. I have been at Howe for 4 and a half years and feel like it has become family. I can not wait for Ms. Emily to come in and expand her knowledge while working with your amazing kiddos and our fantastic staff.

Happy new year to you all! I hope 2023 brings you all good health, love, and happiness! <3

Winter Break Homework—- Timeline of Life

Hello Parents!

For our Social Studies Unit this marking period we are working on past, present, and future! In class we have been working on defining these words and giving examples. One way that is the easiest to relate for students is to link it with their own life. For example the past was when they were a baby, the present is now- when they are in kindergarten, and the future will be when they are older.

I would like each child to complete a timeline of their life over break to bring in and present to the class. Please use real pictures and have your child help in the process. The past and present should be actual pictures of your child. For the future your child can choose what they want to be when they grow up. Remember to use the key vocabulary — past, present, and future when working on your project.

PROJECTS ARE DUE ON: MONDAY, January 9th !

The week following break will be when the students will present their projects to the class during show and share time. After the presentation they will be hung in the hallway for other grades to see.

This is meant to be a fun project for you and your child to work on together. You can do a traditional timeline with a poster board or you may search pinterest for other ideas.

Please email me with any questions! I can’t wait to see the projects you come up with! J

End of Week Updates! (A little early)

Hello parents! I am writing our end of week updates a day early. Tonight I am headed off to check off a top bucket list item. I will be absent tomorrow and Monday. Mrs. S will be subbing for me again and they will finish all of the projects and activities I have left for them. I know they are in good hands.

The last two weeks we have:

Finished up learning about capacity in Eureka math. We discussed what containers may hold more, less, or the same of something. If your child told you we ate ice cream this is why. πŸ™‚ Eureka math is now working on the same, more, and less when it comes to drawing and labeling items. They will continue to work on these lessons through January and the module test will be mid-month. They are all doing great at these concepts.

In Benchmark Unit 4 we are working on the fact that Writers tell many stories. We have been writing a couple times a week since October. Now we are trying to add in the 5 W’s while writing. Who is in your story, Where are they at, What are they doing, When is it, and Why are they doing this. It is a bit more challenging but I am loving the progress I am seeing. They are truly are making amazing progress and I can’t wait for you to see a writing sample soon! Unit 4 will carry over into January as well.

For social studies we are finishing up our last Past, Present, Future lesson today! We have spent a lot of time talking about what it was like in the past, things we love about the present (like kitchens to cook yummy food), and some things we might like for the future. We will end the unit with a picture sort, unit test, and then a project you will complete over break. (The directions sheet is coming home today for people who might be out of town during break). The project will count for part of the past, present, future grade AND a speaking grade. For example- can they get up in front of the class and talk about the pictures, etc. Projects will be due on Monday, January 9th, 2023.

Science will be done in January πŸ™‚ We will take a break from Social Studies Units and begin our Montessori animal unit.

All of this is being done plus more! Kindness lessons, study of betta fish for our class pet, Montessori lessons, and of course our Holidays Around the World unit next week!

Whew! We need the long break to recoup from all of our fun learning!

If you need anything while I am away on Friday and Monday please let Ms. Bernadette know in the office. I will miss your kiddos and will be excited to get back to them on Tuesday for the rest of the funs projects we have for the remainder of the week.

P.S. Go Bucs! <3

CandyCane Gram Sale!

Hello Howe Families!

The Candy Cane Gram sale has officially begun! Please talk with your child tonight about  how many candy cane grams they would like to make for friends. These are $1 per gram again this year. In folders each child has an order form and ziplock bag. Tomorrow, we will send home how many you request and have paid for.  You have until next Monday, December 19th to color and add a thoughtful message to the person receiving it. Turn in to your child’s teacher when finished. If you have any questions please let us know!

Have a great Monday.

Holiday Week! (Dec 19-23)

Hello Parents!

The Social Studies Unit we will concentrate on for the last week of December will be “Holidays Around the World”. We will learn about one new holiday each day and I have listed them below. We will read a story, make an art project, and write about the traditions. During the study of the holidays we will be talking about traditions- nothing religious. This is great way to teach students about how different people celebrate different things in America and all around the world. (We will also be learning about Chinese New Year and Ramadan when those happen later in the calendar year).

Thank you all so much for taking care of what was needed on the sign up genius. It is very much appreciated. The students love the daily projects that last week and it keeps us busy!

Please email me if you would rather your child sit out for any of the below activities. I do have alternate activities if you want your child not to participate.

Daily schedule is as follows:

Monday- Kwanzaa (family meals with mkeke mats and lighting of candles each night)

Tuesday- Hanukkah- (8 days long, lighting of candles each night, and playing the dreidel game to win chocolate gelt)

Wednesday- Australian Christmas (Warm weather and kangaroos)

Thursday- Germany/Grinch Day (focus on trees and grinch movie/snacks in the afternoon)

Friday- America (Presents to those we love, Frosty the Snowman read aloud).
