Wayne County Regional Enhancement Education Millage Proposal

School districts in Wayne County have placed a proposal on the November 8th ballot to provide added funding for our schools. It is the “Regional Enhancement Millage Proposal.”

If approved by the entire county, the 2 mil proposal will generate approximately $6.2 million from Dearborn but the District will receive $7.8 million in additional funding for our schools.  Money would go to local schools starting this year and the millage expires after six years.  Continue reading

A book review by Cindy Hakim

“Cinder” by Marissa Meyer

A brief summary:  In the book Cinder, a young mechanic goes on an embarking mission. A deadly plague strikes, while the people of lunar (THE MOON) watch happily awaiting their moment to attack. No one knows that there fate lies in the hands of a cyborg girl(second class) who is caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal. Will cinder be able to stop the people of Luna before they take over Earth?

Whats really interesting is how Cinder’s stepmother treats Cinder. She calls her her maid and makes her do all her chores. When Cinder’s stepsister who’s near and dear to her heart dies, Cinder is devastated and is blamed for the death by her stepmother.

I really recommend anyone to read this book. It is very interesting and you won’t be able to put it down.

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate

Brief summary:  Ivan, a gorilla that lives in a cage at the mall, tells about his experiences while being on display for all to see. He interacts with his friend Stella, the elephant in the next cage, and Bob, a stray dog that wanders the mall. Ruby, a baby elephant, arrives at the mall and Ivan cannot imagine Ruby spending his whole life in captivity. Ivan uses his artistic talents to help Ruby campaign for a better life in a zoo.

What was something very interesting?

Ivan, a gorilla, is personified in this humorous first-person narrative. It is a story of friendship amongst captive animals. They act like a family and do what they can to help each other out.

What is your recommendation?

The One and Only Ivan is a John Newbery Medal book written in 2012. It is a very easy book to read in just a couple hours.
