{"id":74,"date":"2019-08-26T18:52:23","date_gmt":"2019-08-26T22:52:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/brownm\/?p=74"},"modified":"2019-08-26T18:52:13","modified_gmt":"2019-08-26T22:52:13","slug":"algebra-1-parent-letter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/brownm\/2019\/08\/26\/algebra-1-parent-letter\/","title":{"rendered":"Algebra 1 Parent Letter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Dear Parents\/Guardians,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My name is <strong>Mr. Brown<\/strong> and I would like to welcome your child to Room 31.&nbsp; The start of the school year holds the promise of new discovery and learning, as well as the prospect of personal growth in all areas.&nbsp; I look forward to an exciting, productive year working with you and your child.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Objective:<\/strong> The objective of this course is to help students to improve and excel in math according to the state standards set for Algebra I.<\/p>\n<p>As this course is for <strong>achieving high school credit<\/strong>, the students <strong>must pass<\/strong> a comprehensive Midterm and Final exam. &nbsp;These two exams will be averaged together and the student&#8217;s placement the following year (9th grade) will be as follows:<\/p>\n<p>78% or better will automatically be placed into an Honors Algebra 2 course the following year..<\/p>\n<p>70-77% with strong Standardized test scores will be placed into an Algebra 2 course the following year.<\/p>\n<p>Below 70% &nbsp;will be placed into an Algebra 1 course the following year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Instructional Objectives: <\/strong>At the end of the school year, the successful student will be able to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Master advanced math skills according to Algebra I course standards<\/li>\n<li>Apply skills and knowledge to real-world situations, assignments, tests, and homework<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Instructional Content\/Course Outline:<\/strong> <strong>All classes will be working in the following areas:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Solving Equations<\/li>\n<li>Solving Inequalities and Proportions<\/li>\n<li>Graphing and Functions<\/li>\n<li>Linear Equations<\/li>\n<li>Systems of Equations and Inequalities<\/li>\n<li>Exponential Functions<\/li>\n<li>Polynomials and Factoring<\/li>\n<li>Quadratic Equations and Functions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Grading Criteria:<\/strong> <em>Students will be graded using the percentage scale below.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>100-98 = A+&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 97-93 = A&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 92-90 = A-<\/p>\n<p>89-88 = B+&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 87-83 = B&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 82-80 = B-<\/p>\n<p>79-78 = C+&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 77-73 = C&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 72-70 = C-<\/p>\n<p>69-68 = D+&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 67-63 = D&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 62-60 = D-<\/p>\n<p>59 \u2013 Below = E<\/p>\n<p>Often, homework will be graded on a four-point rubric that includes timeliness, completeness, accuracy, and incorporating the lessons taught prior to the assignment<\/p>\n<p>There are 2 parts to your student\u2019s grade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part 1 \u2013 Formative Assessments&nbsp; (Homework and Classwork)<\/strong> <em>Formative Assessments are worth <strong>20%<\/strong> of the grade.<\/em> Homework will be assigned three to four days a week.&nbsp; It is due at the beginning of each class.&nbsp;&nbsp; Late work must be turned in before the summative assessment for the material covered in order to avoid a grade of \u2018zero\u2019 for each assignment.
