{"id":989,"date":"2017-01-13T09:35:08","date_gmt":"2017-01-13T14:35:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/bridger\/?p=989"},"modified":"2017-01-13T09:35:08","modified_gmt":"2017-01-13T14:35:08","slug":"focus-for-the-week-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/bridger\/2017\/01\/13\/focus-for-the-week-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Focus for the Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<table border=\"0\" width=\"98%\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"3\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"93%\">\n<p>Over the next few weeks third graders will be working on the following skills and concepts.<\/p>\n<p>Language Arts<\/p>\n<p>During this unit, students will learn that realistic fiction is a classification of literature containing stories that could happen in the real world, in a time and setting that is possible, and with characters that are true to life, yet drawn from the writer\u2019s imagination. Students will learn that realistic fiction genre can be divided into different categories using aspects of theme (e.g., survival friendship diversity, tolerance, environmental preservation, courage, freedom, justice). This unit crosses into MP 3.<\/p>\n<p>Math<\/p>\n<p>This unit is focused on the number system; reading, writing, comparing, and ordering whole numbers and decimals to the thousandths. Much emphasis is to build on their previous knowledge of number to 1,000 and extending to 100,000 and decimals. \u00a0Also, remember to keep practicing the multiplication times tables up to 10!<\/p>\n<p>Social Studies<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"98%\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"3\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"93%\">\n<p>The Government of Michigan: In this unit students extend their civic perspective from second grade local government to state government. They begin with an examination of the purposes of government and ways in which the government of Michigan works to fulfill those purposes. By exploring the concept of representative government, students learn how the power of government resides with the people. They build upon their knowledge of local government and community by distinguishing the roles of state government from local government and explore why state governments are needed. By learning about the Michigan Constitution, students are introduced to the concept of limited government and the history of Michigan\u2019s Constitution. An understanding of limited government is further enriched through an exploration of how the powers of government are separated among the branches in state government. Students then explore the judicial branch by examining ways courts function to resolve conflict.
