Explanation: <\/b><\/p>\n

*If the ending<\/b> is pronounced as in <\/span>station<\/span><\/i>, then it’s spelled <\/span>-tion<\/span><\/i>. For example:\u00a0<\/span>addition; duration; nation; solution; ambition; edition; caution; position.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

*If the noun<\/b> is related to a word ending in <\/span>-ate<\/span><\/i>, then the ending will be <\/span>-ation<\/span><\/i>, e.g. <\/span>donation<\/span><\/i> (from <\/span>donate<\/span><\/i>) or <\/span>vacation<\/span><\/i> (from <\/span>vacate<\/span><\/i>). Here are some more examples:\u00a0<\/span>accommodation; location; creation; rotation; education; mediation.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

*If the ending<\/b> comes after any consonant apart from <\/span>-l, -n<\/span><\/i>, or <\/span>-r<\/span><\/i>, then the ending is spelled <\/span>-tion<\/span><\/i>: <\/span>action; connection; reception; affection; interruption; description; collection; infection; deception.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

*After <\/b>-n<\/i><\/b> and <\/b>-r<\/i><\/b>, the ending can be <\/span>-tion<\/span><\/i> or <\/span>-sion<\/span><\/i>. It’s more likely to be <\/span>-tion<\/span><\/i> if the word’s related to another one that ends in <\/span>-t<\/span><\/i> or <\/span>-tain<\/span><\/i>, e.g. <\/span>assertion<\/span><\/i> (from <\/span>assert<\/span><\/i>) or <\/span>retention<\/span><\/i> (from <\/span>retain<\/span><\/i>).
