Drawing & Shading Ribbons<\/span><\/h1>\n

& DIRECTIONAL SHADING<\/span><\/h1>\n

When drawing a ribbon, keep your outlines <\/span>very light.<\/i><\/b><\/i>\u00a0The drawings below show darker outlines <\/span>only<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0to better help you understand the step-by-step process. If you darken your lines too much at the beginning, you will not be able to make them disappear\u00a0when you start shading. When you are finished, you must have\u00a0<\/span>NO<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0outlines left!<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

STEP 1: Draw the first line and make it curve<\/strong><\/em> in different directions.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

STEP 2: Draw a second curvy line alongside<\/strong><\/em> the first one:<\/p>\n

A. \u00a0start by making it\u00a0parallel<\/strong><\/em> to the first one…<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a> \"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

B. \u00a0then narrow<\/strong><\/em> the distance between them, to let the second\u00a0line\u00a0intersect<\/strong><\/em> the first line in the area where there is\u00a0a major change in direction<\/strong><\/em> (a big curve.)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

C. \u00a0after intersecting them, continue drawing the second line, making the two lines\u00a0parallel again.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

D. \u00a0do the same thing again when you come near another major curve.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

STEP 3: Add a new line by connecting the two lines near every intersecting area…<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

…by drawing a a short curved line that curves smoothly<\/strong><\/em> and gradually<\/strong><\/em> into\u00a0both<\/strong><\/em> lines. \u00a0It should look like it’s a\u00a0natural part<\/strong><\/em> of both lines.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

STEP 4: erase only ONE<\/strong><\/em> of the two inside lines that make up the X (the red OR<\/i><\/b><\/i> the blue one.)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Remember to\u00a0keep your outlines very light.<\/i><\/b><\/i>\u00a0These illustrations\u00a0show darker outlines only<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0to better help you understand the step-by-step process.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

SHADING:<\/p>\n

A. Start shading by darkening the INSIDE<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0corners of each twist (under the twist.)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

B. Keep in mind as you add more shading, that a white area should be reserved in the middle of each section.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

C. Darken the end of each section up to 100% if it is below<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0the twist, gradually lightening towards the white area in the middle of the section.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

D. Darken the end of each section only to 50% grey if it is above<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0the twist, gradually lightening towards the white area in the middle of the section.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

E. Shade\u00a0GRADUALLY<\/strong><\/em> from dark to light,\u00a0IN THE DIRECTION\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>of the ribbon’s curve.<\/p>\n

As you shade, your outlines should be light enough to erase easily, or fade away and\u00a0disappear into your shading. Your final drawing should look like this:<\/p>\n
