{"id":551,"date":"2017-02-06T13:57:08","date_gmt":"2017-02-06T18:57:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/alabakoffj\/?p=551"},"modified":"2017-02-06T13:57:08","modified_gmt":"2017-02-06T18:57:08","slug":"week-of-february-6-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/alabakoffj\/2017\/02\/06\/week-of-february-6-10\/","title":{"rendered":"Week of February 6-10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reminders for this week:<\/p>\n<div class=\"gmail_default\">\n<p>DuVall&#8217;s 5th grade will be having a fundraiser for their Inland Seas field trip in Traverse City on Valentine&#8217;s Day (<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_302790724\"><span class=\"aQJ\">next Tuesday<\/span><\/span>).\u00a0 Both Brera and Yogurtopia (They are next to each other) will give a portion of their proceeds for the day back to us.\u00a0 Brera is giving 15% back (Pizzas 5.99-9.99) while Yogurtopia is giving 50%, just mention DuVall when you make your purchase.\u00a0 Dinner and a dessert treat for your loved ones \ud83d\ude42 \u00a0sounds terrific, right? \u00a0 We&#8217;ll be sending home a reminder flyer later in the week.\u00a0 Please tell your family and friends!\u00a0 Feel free to let them know we really appreciate them too!<span class=\"HOEnZb\"><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Valentine&#8217;s Day is Coming!<\/p>\n<p>The students will be able to pass out Valentines to their classmates. \u00a0If they wish to do so, they will need to fill out one for each student in the class (Mrs. Alabakoff likes Valentines too!). \u00a0I am sending home a class list of names if your child wants to personalize the Valentine cards. \u00a0It is not required and can just sign their own name.<\/p>\n<p>We are learning:<\/p>\n<p>Spelling&#8211;This week&#8217;s focus is homophones (words that sound the same, have different spelling and meaning). \u00a0Practice how to spell them, but also the meaning of each and how to tell the difference. \u00a0I will be giving a sentence with each word and students will have to identify the correct word out of the pair.<\/p>\n<p>Daily5\/Cafe&#8211;We are working on informational text and main idea with details. \u00a0Students have been using graphic organizers to practice this strategy. \u00a0They are also working on their own books as well.<\/p>\n<p>Writer&#8217;s Workshop&#8211;We have just begun our research for our public discourse issue. \u00a0We have selected issues that are important to Michigan! \u00a0Students will research and use that information to write an opinion letter. \u00a0They are already learning a lot about and are quite excited!<\/p>\n<p>Social Studies&#8211;We finished our study of Michigan history up to statehood. \u00a0The students did a great job and had a lot of fun learning. \u00a0They were very motivated. \u00a0I will be sending home the assessment I did with them later in the week.<\/p>\n<p>Science&#8211;We have begun our unit on Light and Sound. \u00a0Students learned about different types of energy and completed a graphic organizer with examples. \u00a0They also created superheroes that use different types of energy. \u00a0We will be studying different types of materials light travels through and creating designs with these materials. \u00a0Students will also be learning about reflection and refraction with various activities.<\/p>\n<p>Math&#8211;Our focus is fractions and decimals this week. \u00a0 Students will be using models to represent both. \u00a0 We are also still working on multiplication and division.<\/p>\n<p>Have a sunny week!<\/p>\n<div class=\"yj6qo ajU\">\n<div id=\":o7\" class=\"ajR\" tabindex=\"0\" data-tooltip=\"Show trimmed content\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ajT\" src=\"https:\/\/ssl.gstatic.com\/ui\/v1\/icons\/mail\/images\/cleardot.gif\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reminders for this week: DuVall&#8217;s 5th grade will be having a fundraiser for their Inland Seas field trip in Traverse City on Valentine&#8217;s Day (next Tuesday).\u00a0 Both Brera and Yogurtopia (They are next to each other) will give a portion of their proceeds for the day back to us.\u00a0 Brera is giving 15% back (Pizzas 5.99-9.99) while Yogurtopia is giving 50%, just mention DuVall when you make your purchase.\u00a0 Dinner and a dessert treat for your loved ones \ud83d\ude42 \u00a0sounds terrific, right? \u00a0 We&#8217;ll be sending home a reminder flyer later in the week.\u00a0 Please tell your family and friends!\u00a0 Feel free to let them know we really appreciate them too!
