{"id":473,"date":"2016-10-03T14:46:40","date_gmt":"2016-10-03T18:46:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/alabakoffj\/?p=473"},"modified":"2016-10-03T14:46:52","modified_gmt":"2016-10-03T18:46:52","slug":"week-of-october-3rd-7th","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/alabakoffj\/2016\/10\/03\/week-of-october-3rd-7th\/","title":{"rendered":"Week of October 3rd-7th"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wow! \u00a0I can&#8217;t believe we are in October! \u00a0I am really enjoying your children and look forward to watching them grow.<\/p>\n<p>Just a reminder&#8212;Make sure your child dresses for the weather. \u00a0It has been chilly in the mornings (although I am hearing it will reach 80 this week), and we try to get outside for some fresh air in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>If you have not already done so, please turn in permission slip and money for the trip on Friday the 21st. \u00a0Parents are welcome to attend, but they will also need to pay the $10. \u00a0We will be walking to catch the shuttle from the Henry Ford Museum. \u00a0Looking forward to a great trip!<\/p>\n<p>We are learning:<\/p>\n<p>Spelling&#8211;This week our spelling focus is long and short e. \u00a0We also have a few content words that go along with what we are learning in other subjects. \u00a0Your child should be able to tell you about them. \u00a0We work on the spelling patterns for the words, so even if the words are easy to spelling students also need to identify the patterns. \u00a0For example, ee and ea make the long e sound. \u00a0They should be able to transfer this to their reading and writing.<\/p>\n<p>Daily5\/Cafe&#8211;Our focus is Check for Understanding when we read. \u00a0We are also exploring folktales and learning about character traits. \u00a0Students will be making their own webs with partners about the characters in their own books. \u00a0We will then move on to fable and explore their characteristics.<\/p>\n<p>Writer&#8217;s Workshop&#8211;We are working on a descriptive piece about your child&#8217;s favorite place. \u00a0Students should be including lots of descriptive language. \u00a0We first explored the mentor text Saturdays and Teacakes for inspiration and example of good writing.<\/p>\n<p>Math&#8211;Tonight a Unit One pretest will be coming home that we will use as a study guide. \u00a0Students worked on time, elapsed time, bar graphs and pictographs. \u00a0Students even collected their own data and made a bar graph! \u00a0We are moving on to addition of multi-digit numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Social Studies&#8211;Our first unit is Geography. \u00a0We are learning about Michigan&#8217;s relative location using a compass rose, as well as what region to which our community belongs. \u00a0This week we will be exploring the natural characteristics of Michigan such as landforms, water and natural resources. \u00a0We will be making flipbooks!<\/p>\n<p>The students are enjoying Michigan Made as well! \u00a0We sampled Hudsonville ice cream this past week! \u00a0Delicious!<\/p>\n<p>If you and your child see something that he\/she would like to sample and would like to donate, it would be great! \u00a0The two third grade classes work together on this, so let me know if you would like to donate an item for one of the Fridays.<\/p>\n<p>Have a sunny week!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wow! \u00a0I can&#8217;t believe we are in October! \u00a0I am really enjoying your children and look forward to watching them grow.
