{"id":277,"date":"2015-10-06T08:32:15","date_gmt":"2015-10-06T12:32:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/alabakoffj\/?p=277"},"modified":"2015-10-06T08:32:15","modified_gmt":"2015-10-06T12:32:15","slug":"week-of-october-5th-9th","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/alabakoffj\/2015\/10\/06\/week-of-october-5th-9th\/","title":{"rendered":"Week of October 5th-9th"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hope everyone is enjoying this warm up for Fall! \u00a0I wish it wouldn&#8217;t get any colder than this, but it will! \u00a0Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather. \u00a0Even if it gets warmer in the afternoon, the mornings can be very chilly! \u00a0We try to get outside for fresh air and movement in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>I will normally post the information for the week on Monday, but this Monday was especially busy!<\/p>\n<p>Reminders:<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow&#8211;Late Start Wednesday&#8211;First bell rings at 9:35<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This week we are learning:<\/p>\n<p>Spelling: \u00a0Our focus this week is long and short o. \u00a0Students sort the words to identify the sound and also come up with other words that fit the pattern. \u00a0We also have 3 content words that may connect with what we are learning about in Math\/Social Studies\/Science. \u00a0It is important that they study the words each night for the test on Friday. \u00a0 Students should be able to tell you what the spelling pattern is&#8211;for example: the magic e makes the vowel long, ow makes a long o sound&#8230;.This is important because your child needs to be able to transfer this to his\/her writing.<\/p>\n<p>Daily5\/Cafe&#8211;This week our focus is Realistic Fiction and we are also working on characters and their traits based on evidence in the story. \u00a0We will also work on Asking questions. \u00a0Students will be choosing their individual goals this week and next.<\/p>\n<p>Be sure they are reading 20 minutes a night and they can tell you about what they are reading.<\/p>\n<p>Writer&#8217;s Workshop&#8211;Students are working on a descriptive piece about their favorite place. \u00a0We focus on good leads, a good start to grab the reader&#8217;s attention. \u00a0We will be doing the district writing prompt this week as well.<\/p>\n<p>Math&#8211;We have been working on time and elapsed time. \u00a0Hopefully, your child showed you how they &#8220;jump&#8221; on a number line to show how much time has elapsed. \u00a0They are getting quite good at it! \u00a0We will then move on to bar graphs. \u00a0Students will be able to get information from the graph, as well as a produce their own graph based on a set of data.<\/p>\n<p>Social Studies&#8211;Currently, we are working geography in Michigan. \u00a0Students just finished up studying about landforms and water in Michigan. \u00a0This week we learn about the vegetation and climate of Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>I alternate between Social Studies and Science for continuity. \u00a0When we finish geography we will move on to Science.<\/p>\n<p>We also have been enjoying our Michigan Made Fridays! \u00a0We have sampled Better Made potato chips and Flat-out bread.<\/p>\n<p>We welcome donations for Michigan Made also! \u00a0If you would like to send in a product let me know! \u00a0This helps to get your child involved in &#8220;Buy Michigan!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Have a sunny week!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hope everyone is enjoying this warm up for Fall! \u00a0I wish it wouldn&#8217;t get any colder than this, but it will! \u00a0Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather. \u00a0Even if it gets warmer in the afternoon, the mornings can be very chilly! \u00a0We try to get outside for fresh air and movement in the morning.
