{"id":101,"date":"2014-01-14T10:32:40","date_gmt":"2014-01-14T15:32:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/alabakoffj\/?p=101"},"modified":"2014-01-14T10:32:40","modified_gmt":"2014-01-14T15:32:40","slug":"week-of-january-13-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/alabakoffj\/2014\/01\/14\/week-of-january-13-17\/","title":{"rendered":"Week of January 13-17"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This Week:<\/p>\n<p>Field trip to Cranbrook on Thursday! \u00a0We will be leaving around 9:00. \u00a0Students should bring a bag lunch with a drink. \u00a0No glass bottles please. \u00a0Looking forward to a great time!<\/p>\n<p>Good News! \u00a0Many of the students have earned the top money amount in the classroom! \u00a0On Friday, I will be having lunch with those who are spending their money. \u00a0I will provide the lunch, drink and a treat that day, so students do not need to pack a lunch. \u00a0Ask your child if they will be participating for this round. \u00a0Other students still have the opportunity to earn this reward.<\/p>\n<p>Students who earned their money also get a day in my comfy chair!<\/p>\n<p>We are learning:<\/p>\n<p>Spelling: \u00a0Students are working on their own individual lists and then should be able to use these words in their everyday writing. \u00a0 In the next couple weeks, we will move on to words with similar spelling patterns.<\/p>\n<p>Daily 5\/Cafe: \u00a0Our focus this week is character traits. \u00a0Students are identifying the traits using evidence\/clues from the text. \u00a0We are also starting to learn about cause\/effect. \u00a0This strategy carries over to Social Studies as we study human geography in fourth grade and Michigan history in third grade.<\/p>\n<p>Writer&#8217;s Workshop: \u00a0We finished up our opinion pieces and now will focus on narrative writing. \u00a0We will be learning about word choice for this piece of writing.<\/p>\n<p>Math: \u00a0Third grade is currently working on multiplication and division. \u00a0Students have learned how to represent these operations using pictures, arrays and number sentences. \u00a0We are learning about fact families as well as solving word problems using multiplication and division. \u00a0 Please be sure to complete home links when they are assigned to reinforce concepts taught in class.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth grade is working on multiplying larger digits. \u00a0We have learned a couple different strategies for multiplying. \u00a0A favorite of the students is the lattice method. \u00a0Have your son or daughter teach it to you! \u00a0Students may use whatever strategy works best for them. \u00a0We will then move on to estimating with multiples of 10 and solving word problems using larger multiplication.<\/p>\n<p>Science: \u00a0Before the break both grades took the Science test. \u00a0Due to issues with the computer, I cannot send home the paper copy of your child&#8217;s test. \u00a0I had the students write down their test score in their planner, so you would know how they did. \u00a0Overall, the grades were really good! \u00a0If you have questions about your child&#8217;s test, please feel free to contact me.<\/p>\n<p>Social Studies: \u00a0We have now moved onto Social Studies for the next couple weeks. \u00a0Students in third grade are learning about Michigan history. \u00a0Fourth grade is learning about human geography.<\/p>\n<p>We are continuing with Michigan Made Fridays. \u00a0If you are interested in donating a Michigan item for the both classes please let me know!<\/p>\n<p>Have a sunny week!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This Week: Field trip to Cranbrook on Thursday! \u00a0We will be leaving around 9:00. \u00a0Students should bring a bag lunch with a drink. \u00a0No glass bottles please. \u00a0Looking forward to a great time!
