{"id":1092,"date":"2018-12-13T16:40:08","date_gmt":"2018-12-13T21:40:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/abdullf\/?p=1092"},"modified":"2018-12-13T16:40:08","modified_gmt":"2018-12-13T21:40:08","slug":"congratulations-lwza-almaflehi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iblog.dearbornschools.org\/abdullf\/2018\/12\/13\/congratulations-lwza-almaflehi\/","title":{"rendered":"Congratulations Lwza Almaflehi!!!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE<\/p>\n<p>Dec. 11, 2018<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Five Students from Dearborn Public Schools and the Crestwood School District Awarded for Their Outstanding Writing at the 2018 Young Authors\u2019\u00a0Festival<\/p>\n<p>One student from McCollough Elementary School, two students from Hillcrest Elementary School, and two students from William Ford Elementary School received awards for their writing at the University of Michigan-Dearborn\u00a0Mardigian Library\u2019s sixth annual Young Authors\u2019\u00a0Festival. The half-day event was held in the library on Saturday, Nov. 10. Approximately 80 young writers from grades 3 to 5, along with parents and teachers listened as the twelve award winners read aloud excerpts from their winning entries.<\/p>\n<p>Receiving awards were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a03rd Grade,\u00a01st\u00a0Prize: Madeena Ameena El-Mubarak (McCollough Elem.) for \u201cFirst a Dreamer, Then a Leader,\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 3rd Grade,\u00a02nd Prize: Hailey Cummings (Hillcrest Elem.) for \u201cThe Day of My Gang,\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 3rd Grade,\u00a03rd Prize: Leah Taylor (Hillcrest Elem.) for \u201cI Had a Dream,\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 4th Grade,\u00a0Honorable Mention: Mustafa Sharif (William Ford Elem.) for \u201cThe Leader in Me,\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a05th Grade,\u00a0Honorable Mention: Lwza Almaflehi (William Ford Elem.) for \u201cA Time I was a Leader.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The 2018 Young Authors\u2019 Writing Contest received approximately 150 entries from children in grades 3 to 5. This year&#8217;s theme was &#8220;Leadership.&#8221; Entries were judged by UM-Dearborn\u00a0pre-service teachers.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s honorarium, Mark Crilley, author and illustrator of <em>Akiko on the Planet Smoo<\/em>, shared writing and illustrating tips with the audience. Through his creative flair, he modeled how to give characters voice through written words and illustrated pictures. He also stressed the importance of writers developing their voice through revision.<\/p>\n<p>UM-Dearborn pre-service teachers taught children through interactive sessions focused on writing and reading. Workshop topics included crafting poetry, writing imaginative stories, detailing family traditions, acting out stories, and creating books. Pre-service teachers also led parents through strategy sessions focused on supporting children\u2019s literacy development at home.
