News Alert! Future Scientists Investigate Car Ramp

Watch out Ford Motor Company!  Our kindergarten scientists were given the question, “which car will go down the ramp the fastest and why?  They broke into groups and “synergized” to find the answer.  Some groups actually build their own ramps out of blocks while others tested the cars directly on the floor.  Afterwards, the scientists made their “hypothesis” during Writer’s Workshop, which worked perfectly for opinion writing.  Right before lunch, we tested the cars down the official ramp and came up with a clear winner.  Ask your child which car won the race today!  Take a look at the scientists in action.

A few other things to note:

W.I.G  (Wildly Important Goal)  After conferences, I had many enthusiastic students telling me how they were practicing for our MATH W.I.G., which is to count up to 100.  If your child feels prepared, have them tell me and I will listen to them count during snack time.

Habit 7:  Sharpen the Saw-  no, we are not having students use sharp blades in class.  Sharpening the saw means to have balance in your life.  Everyone needs to take time to do things that are good for your mind, body and soul.  That includes you too parents!  Have the students learn from your example.  I try to show the students that I live the Habits too.

Here are just some things we will be working in class over the next few weeks:

Reading:  We are working on retelling stories as well as practicing sounds.

Math:  We are practicing answering “how many?”

Social Studies:  We are studying needs and wants/ goods and services.

Science:  We are studying pushes and pulls.

Writing:  We will begin opinion writing.

Leader in Me:  We will live habits 1-7.

Have a great week!

Ms. Wright

Snow Clothes!

Dear Families,

Here at Lindbergh, we realize the importance of young children getting physical activity and fresh air every day.  Therefore, if the temperature is above 20 degrees we will go outside.  This is a great example of Habit 7, “Sharpening the Saw!”

snowpants and   boots

If there is snow on the ground and your child wants to play in it, they will need to bring snow pants and boots to school.  Students who do not bring snow pants and boots, will still go outside but will only play on the blacktop. Every child who came today with snowpants and boots were able to dress themselves with no help from me.  🙂  I think that is one for the record books!  🙂  I love this class!!

Please label your child’s name inside their clothing, just in case things get mixed up.

Also, I have several pairs of  black snowpants that my sons have outgrown that are looking for a new home.  Let me know if you are interested.

Stay warm,

Ms. Wright

Social Studies Project Based Learning Unit

Hi Families,

Today we started our new unit on Needs and Wants in Social Studies.  I put out a variety of different snacks for the students to chose from.  They could only select one and had to be able to tell me why they chose it.

PBL UNIt Wants and Needs 001

It was interesting to watch the students select the snack.  We had 7 students select a piece of fruit, 11 students select cookies and 1 student select fruit snacks.

PBL UNIt Wants and Needs 002

In the days ahead, we will be investigating our driving question “Do all food choices matter?”  We will be looking at food labels, especially at how many grams of sugar are in some of our favorite foods.  Talking about what we need might be different than what we want!

If anyone knows of a dietitian or a nurse who would be willing to come visit our classroom and answer a few questions on healthy food choices, please let me know!

I will keep you posted on our learning.

Also,  for science we need pictures of your child demonstrating a push or a pull at home.  If you could send a picture in or email one to me, that would be great!

Thanks!

Ms Wright

Monthly Reading Homework

Hi Families,

readers 344

We had 15 students bring back their Nightly Reading Homework today!  They received a coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.  At our house, when my sons receive their Pizza Hut coupons for reading, we call ahead to the carry-out Pizza Hut location in Dearborn Heights and pick it up.  It is located at 26445 Ford Rd.  The phone number is 313-274-0600.  You don’t have to order anything else.  The coupon is valid for 30 days so enjoy it!

Students who brought back their reading homework today also received a reading charm necklace or bracelet.  Each month that your child brings back their homework, they will pick out another charm.  Your child will only get one chain so make sure to keep it in a safe place.  Most students today hooked it on their backpacks for safe keeping.  If your child did not bring back their homework today, I will let them turn it on Wednesday.  Thanks for all of your support!!

Ms. Wright
