Wayne County Regional Enhancement Education Millage Proposal

School districts in Wayne County have placed a proposal on the November 8th ballot to provide added funding for our schools. It is the “Regional Enhancement Millage Proposal.”

If approved by the entire county, the 2 mil proposal will generate approximately $6.2 million from Dearborn but the District will receive $7.8 million in additional funding for our schools.  Money would go to local schools starting this year and the millage expires after six years.  Continue reading

Classroom Teacher Postings

Good Morning Haigh parents/guardians

You will be able to see your student’s classroom teacher posted on Thursday, September 3rd at 5:00pm. The rosters will be posted on the doors at the front office. If you are a Kindergarten parent/guardian you will also see whether your student is an AM or PM attendee for September 9th-11th.  This is part of Dearborn Public Schools “Soft Start Program”. The purpose of the Soft Start program is to provide shorter days and to introduce your child to his/her kindergarten teacher. Having these shorter days will allow your student to familiarize him/herself with the common routines and procedures of our school and ensure a positive start to their kindergarten year. Thank you for your support and partnership during this first week of school. We have many events planned for the year and love having parents volunteer and join us. Please continue to visit our school website at http://haigh.dearbornschools.org/  for upcoming events and visit our front office to pick up more information.

Enjoy the rest of Summer Break and we will see you soon!!

Over Summer Break

Haigh Community,

Being a curriculum person I will continue through out the year to share with you items to work on at home. Below are a few things that will increase your student’s comprehension in both ELA(Reading) and Math.

ELA Activities: Have your students read short passages to you and do the following: have them make predictions(inferences) about what is next in the story or what the characters may be thinking, relate the passage to another reading or to something in their life, have them summarize or retell  to you what they just read, pick out new vocab words and have them read the surrounding sentences to establish the meaning of the new word, chunk the reading and have them pull out the main ideas as they read through the passage, and have your student generate questions about the reading as they move through it.

Math Activities: In the lower grades have them work on their basic addition and subtraction facts. For example being able to count up to 20, then starting to pair numbers that equal 20. Examples ( 15+5) (12+8) (8+12)  (7+13) etc.. Then do the same to get down to 10 with subtraction, (17-7) or (13-3). For the older grades knowing their basic math skills is critical. Having multiplication and division flash cards is huge. Each day they should be practicing their flash cards and getting those facts embedded into their brains will allow for great comprehension at these grade levels. For all grades having the students help with measurements when cooking, read instructions while putting together furniture, or simply building items then questioning them on the steps it took to build and the quantity of the parts involved will all help.

***The main thing that every student at Haigh should be doing each day is Reading. That daily practice will allow them to stay at their grade level expectation or in most cases greatly exceed that grade level if they are reading and using the ELA activities on a daily basis***

I will continue to share more information, especially when we get into the school year and we can focus in on the current learning targets for the different content areas,

Thank you for all your time in reading this!

Mr. Short

Honored to be at Haigh :)

Haigh Students and Community,

Thank you for this amazing honor of becoming the new Principal at Haigh Elementary. I am beyond excited at joining Haigh and becoming an active member of your community! Prior to Haigh, I spent 6 years in Arizona working in 2 different K-8 buildings. While at these buildings I served on many committees for both districts and was very involved in school success and community building. I also presented and trained many of my staff members in modern technology, curriculum, and student engagement with in their classrooms. My last 2 years were spent in Garden City,Michigan. Here I spent 1 year in the classroom, teaching 6th grade all subjects and 1 year as the Assistant Principal at the 5th and 6th grade building. My past 8 years have given me vast experiences in education. I am excited as the new Principal to be able to share with you my experiences and also learn from you as a community. I can’t wait to meet all of you and I hope you have a great Summer Vacation!!

Mr. Short
