Voting before Feb. 27: For the first time, local voters will have two ways they can cast their ballots before the Feb. 27 primary.
Absentee voting will start in late January as city clerks begin mailing absentee ballots to those who requested them. To receive an absentee ballot, a person must complete an Absentee Ballot Request Form. This request can be completed online or via a paper form submitted to your local city clerk’s office via mail or in person. Those who plan to vote absentee and then mail the ballot back should drop the ballot in the mail at least two weeks before the election. Completed absentee ballots also can be submitted in person via designated drop boxes or at the clerk’s office until polls close at 8 p.m. on Feb. 27. If a voter requested an absentee ballot and then decides to vote in person on Feb. 27, the person should bring the absentee ballot with them to the poll.
For those participating in the Get 2 to Vote election campaign, remember that not everyone can return a completed absentee ballot. Absentee ballots can only be returned by the person voting, an immediate family member, or someone living with the voter.
Would-be absentee voters can visit their city clerk’s office to complete an Absentee Ballot Request Form, pick up their ballot, and complete and submit the ballot all in one visit. However, those planning to do so should be aware that there may be a substantial wait as clerk offices deal with a deluge of election work.
The 2024 election cycle is only the second presidential election since absentee ballots became available to all Michigan voters. This year marks the first time Michigan voters can also take advantage of early voting.
Early voting is like regular voting, except up to nine days earlier. No special request form is required and nothing is sent through the mail. Registered voters simply show up at their city’s early voting location during voting hours, preferably with a driver’s license or other official photo ID. Early voting starts nine days before the election, which for this year means those polls will open Feb. 17. Dearborn voters can visit the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center from Feb. 17 through Feb. 25 from 9 am until 5 pm. This is the only early voting location for Dearborn. Dearborn Heights residents will be able to vote early at the Canfield Community Center from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Feb. 17 through Feb. 25.
Schools will not be used for early voting locations and will continue to have class on those days. Dearborn Public Schools will not have classes on Feb. 27 as many of the schools are also used as public polling locations on election day.
Registering to vote: Michigan law also now allows people to register to vote up until election day; however doing so well before the election is strongly encouraged. To register to vote, a person must be at least 18 years of age and a United States citizen. To see if you are registered to vote and to learn more about how to register, visit the Michigan Voter Information Center. Many adults opt to automatically register to vote when they get their Michigan driver’s license.

Some of you may have noticed a traffic situation taking place in front of our school on Thursday morning. Unfortunately we had to contact the Dearborn Police for their assistance in resolving the problem. Fortunately, there were no injuries and students were not in any type of danger.
The busiest times around any school are in the morning during drop off and at the end of the day for pick up. It is imperative that we follow all traffic laws and our own school safety procedures, especially in school zones. Please use this situation as an opportunity to review and reflect so that we can continue to ensure the safety of our students from your home to school, and school to home.
With the start of Early Release Tuesdays next month (October 2023), the district is announcing a new childcare option for parents who need assistance afterschool.
Early Release Enrichment Club is a paid after school enrichment program for students in kindergarten through 8th grade. The program will provide registered students with time for outside play (weather permitting), homework, games and activities for the 90 minutes until the time they would have normally been released from school.
The club costs $11 per session for one student, $8 for the second student and $5 for each additional student from the same family. Online, pre-enrollment is required to ensure the district has proper staffing and supplies. Busing is not available after Enrichment Club.
Parents can sign their child up by the week or for 4 weeks at a time. Early Release Enrichment is planned for every elementary and middle school, but the program may not run in buildings if there is not enough interest.
Early Release Tuesdays are new to Dearborn Public Schools this school year and will provide teachers with additional time to participate in Professional Learning Communities. Early Release Tuesdays start on Oct. 10, 2023 and run through May 28, 2024.
During those months, on each Tuesday school is in session, students will release 90 minutes earlier than usual.
The enrichment program will be staffed by support staff, parapros and other school personnel while teachers are meeting. This is a separate program from Kids Club or the 21st Century learning program offered at some buildings.

Our school year is quickly coming to a close but there is still plenty of teaching and learning to share. All of our remaining days are filled with meaningful instruction and valuable lessons found in our curriculum.
I understand that there have been some notices posted on social media encouraging parents to keep their children home from school on Thursday, June 1st. Some of those notices even go as far as incorrectly stating that we are hosting school assemblies that do not pertain to our curriculum or instruction. I trust our community to see through these inaccurate rumors.
Throughout the year we host a variety of assemblies that support our curriculum, provide students with hands-on experiences, and overall enhance the learning environment.
There are no assemblies or special guest visitors scheduled for tomorrow at our school.

As an update to the classroom relocation due to the winter break flood, all rooms have been restored and students have returned to their normal classrooms. Currently, we are working on ordering and replacing materials that were damaged and removed from the classrooms. Thank you to all who reached out during this unfortunate situation.
Happy New Year! I hope the time during this break was spent together with your family and friends, relaxing, refreshing and preparing for what will be a great 2023!
Perhaps many of you heard about the unfortunate event that took place at William Ford Elementary over this holiday break. On December 24th in the mid-afternoon a sprinkler water line failed in an upstair’s classroom in the new addition of the school near Ford Road due to the extreme cold. Thousands of gallons of water flooded the new addition on that floor and the first floor. Eight classrooms in total were affected, with significant damage in three of those classrooms. The classrooms affected are listed below;
Ms. Vann, Room 114
Ms. Sadek, Room 115
Ms. Hamm, Room 112
Ms. Shami & Ms. Bondy, Room 113
Ms. Hamid, Room 217
Ms. Shajrah, Room 216
Ms. Saeed, Room 214
Ms. Haidar, Room 215
A remediation company was on site and in action within a couple of hours of the water failure. Since then the entire area has been cleaned, sanitized, affected materials and supplies removed, drywall was replaced if it was damaged, ceiling tiles were replaced, and new insulation was installed. Although the affected classrooms will not all likely be ready on Monday, we have made spaces in other rooms to welcome all of our students back to school on Monday, January 9th. Therefore, ALL students will report to school on Monday.
Our teachers in the affected classrooms have come together, spent time during break planning and preparing, and will be ready on Monday. Many other teachers have offered and given their support to their colleagues. Once the eight rooms are cleared and ready for our students, they will move from their temporary classroom and return to their homerooms. This may be on Monday or maybe after a few days. Rest assured, although the location for learning may be different for the students in rooms listed above only, instruction and learning will still continue!
On Monday, January 9th, ALL students are to report as normal. Teachers who may need to use an alternate room will greet their students at arrival and escort them to their temporary classroom. There will be signs in the cafeteria and lobby for students who may have a temporary classroom. Additionally, we will have support staff available to ensure this transition is smooth and seamless. Arrival and dismissal will continue to follow the normal schedule, location, and routine.
As always, we thank you for your continued support. As we say at William Ford, “We are better together.”
Help us help those in need as Dearborn Public Schools collects non-perishable food donations for Zaman International beginning on Monday, November 14, 2022 through Friday, November 18, 2022.
