Peek at The Week

on April 30, 2017

Good evening Haigh families. Tomorrow welcomes May 1st! I can’t believe how quickly this year is flying by. We will continue NWEA testing this week. I plan to have everyone tested by the end of the week so we can have a week to breath before we begin M-Step testing the week of the 15th.

Reminders:

  • We will have early lunch (11:25) on Tuesday only this week.
  • NWEA testing will take place each morning this week.
  • 4th grade Market Day is Friday. Students will visit the 4th grade classrooms and purchase products they created. Students DO NOT need money for this event, as they will receive “play” money.

Reading – We will continue to learn about poetry and it’s inclusion of figurative language by creating figurative language flip books as a resource to refer to. We will also work through our M-Step review folder when time allows.

Writing- Our focus will continue to be on opinion brief writes. Last week we did not get as many lessons as I wanted with our testing and busy schedule.

Math- We wrapped up our fraction unit on Friday with our unit test and I am very happy at how well the class did. We will begin our next unit which is reviewing multiplication and division concepts and practicing multi-step story problems using the CER method to help explain our reasoning.

Social Studies- We will be taking a look at how Michigan’s resources impacted the economy and growth of the state.

Science- We will be comparing how slow and fast changes can affect the land.

Academic Vocabulary-

  1. Idiom-An expression that cannot be understood from the meanings of its separate words but must be learned as a whole. Ex. Break a leg, spill the beans.
  2. Metaphor- Comparing two things NOT using the words ‘like’ or ‘as’.
  3. Simile- Comparing two things that are not alike USING the words ‘like’ or ‘as’.
  4. Entrepreneur-A person who starts a business and is willing to risk loss in order to make money.
